Hi, i decided to open this thread about my M17x R1, i used the search button but didn't found what i was looking for. My question is: Nowdays what kind of upgrade i should buy for my M17x? i need:

    1x SSD ( must be 120GB)
    2x 4gb RAM
1x Optical driver (a cheap one)

    My spec are:

    Alienware M17x
    Stealth Black
Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Q9300
    17" HD LCD 1440x900
    2x2GB Samsung DDR3-SDRAM (1333 MHz) M471B5673EH1-CH9
    nVidia gtx 260m 1gb
Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-7640S SCSI CdRom Device
Motherboard: Alienware, version A0723, Chipset NVIDIA, Model nForce 730i

I though something like this for the ssd:

    http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-2-5-Inch-SH103S3-120G/dp/B007R67FNA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410705306&sr=8-2&keywords=hiperx+ssd+120+gb
    or
    http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-2-5-Inch-Height-SDSSDXP-120G-G25/dp/B00COF7DGS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410705378&sr=8-2&keywords=sandisk+extreme+ssd+120+gb

    for RAM:

    http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-Impact-1600MHz-HX316LS9IBK2/dp/B00KQCU3WM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410705608&sr=8-1&keywords=Impact+SODIMM+-+8GB+Kit*+%282x4GB%29+-+DDR3L+1600MHz+CL9+SODIMM

I don't know if the ram are supported for my motherboard so that's why i decide to open this thread, same for the ssd i dont think it will support the 3K technology. As always thanks for reply

Don't waste your money on a latest Sata III SSD since your laptop only supports Sata II, it's wasted money if you plan on keeping that machine any longer.

Also, upgrading to the 1200p RGB screen should be your next big priority. The 900p screen is horrid by comparison.

Lastly, upgrading with a second 260m for SLI should probably be the other big thing. Essentially maxing out that laptop would be preferred, and for as cheaply as possible. If you're gonna be spending more than $600 on upgrading it, which looks about right, then I'd just save up and buy a newer laptop.

Still... I understand the allure of upgrading an older machine and if you want to, go for it. Just keep your RAM speeds to DDR3 1333, upgrade to the RGB screen and SLI that 260m if you want to see how fast that machine can actually get.

Most SSDs today are all SATA3. It wouldn't matter since prices have come down.

For SSD my recommendation: Amazon.com: Samsung Electronics 850 Pro-Series 2.5" 128GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive Single Unit Version MZ-7KE128BW: Computers & Accessories - Best SSD out right now, 10 year warranty as well!

    For Ram: G.SKILL Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ Laptop Memory - Newegg.com

Not sure on the ODD. Is it a regular sata port like on the R3/R4?

For GPU, you can SLI: NVIDIA GTX 260M 1GB Dell Alienware M15X M17X R2 Video Card 96RJ4 4WGVV WDXVH

I agree on the RGB Display as well.

Ok, my pc don't support sata III, so the SanDisk Extreme SSD Hard Drive 120GB 120 GB Solid State Drive SATA 6GB/s 7200rpm Interface:
SATA III, SATA II is good?

For the RGB LED sorry for the question but i need the WUXGA monitor + the RGB LED cable right?

for the gpu i already have the 5870m but i still dont know how to install it properly if u wanna help me just reply in the official dannyboy thread:

You know, with the amount of money your spending on this, save it, sell this and get a R4 or the new 17... Its not worth upgrading this.. The QX9300 is obsolete and the CF 5870Ms are barely going be good for another year...
