When i was applying artic cooling silver 5 to my cpu i noticed there was a little plastic film around the cpu which i removed. Even though i have not experienced any overheating problems i wonder what was the purpose of that plastic film around the cpu. Any of you guys know???

here is a picture of that plastic the sticker i removed

It's a film to protect the cpu from possible chipping.

if you dont mind me ask, how? it's just a piece of soft plastic. if it's a metal shim, then i can understand. just curious because i removed mine too.

If you think about it, a metal shim would possibly damage the cpu. These mobile cpu's are without their IHS and can get damaged fairly easily.
It's also there to make sure you don't apply thermal paste to other areas. Not something essential, but just there in case. :)

I thought this plastic was just to keep the thermal compound that they just slather on there from getting all over the electronics.
