Yup just warning potential buyers. I'm certainly not gonna say its the best screen I've ever seen, it's not even the most average screen I've ever seen. It's by far one of the WORST screens I have seen.

Yup its terrible. Even the cheap notebooks you buy at bestbuy look better. Actually some of them look about the same.

    Hi guys,

    I've got an Area-51 M17-x With the 1980x1200 screen.

I have just started having a problem with the screen where the left hand side will go dim after about 30 minutes of use. I'm guessing this means it's a dual lamp :p but I need to do a repair, it's just out of warrantee, does any1 know of any services or information that would be of any help to me please.

    Regards

    Zach.

It is a dual lamp, but probably has smaller or less efficient bulbs (my guess anyway).

curious..can we replace to bulbs to improve screen quality?

When I get ahold of my system, I was contemplating replacing the entire LCD CCFL panel (dependent on the quality of mine), but if just replacing the bulbs would give the same effect, it seems like it'd be a more cost-effective solution.

I will be using my own screen if i get another M17x when the ATI cards come out . i would not go with there screens at all because of the Auto Dimming feature im not a fan of so i wanted to know if the glass came off fairly easy?. I got a new screen for my m17 yesterday and its a single bulb LG screen rated around 300nits and its amazing even compared to the m17x next to it .

I'm curious to see if you can physically take the lcd out from behind the glass. Oh and I ordered the asus g51vx-a1, it supposedly has a gorgeous led screen but as you know I'm the pickiest person on the planet so I'll find out friday.

Somehow I think these displays are not going to come apart from the E2E panel easily.

They are one unit and are probably glued together.

Exactly which is why I didn't even bother taking my m17x apart and just sent it back. That totally killed any excitement about replacing the screen for me. At least the customer service was top notch.

    The SXPS 1640 has tabs/clips.

The M17x lcd is much closer to the E2E panel that I think it is sealed...

you didn't have to take all apart since the replacements come with the frame and the glass but is always better to have them do the hard job for you me personaly I take my laptop apart like 6 times and two was for fun only

Well I mean I didn't bother taking it apart because I can't replace the lcd behind the glass because it was probably glued which meant I would be stuck with the screen I had and any replacement would still be a samsung and I didn't feel like playing screen roulette.

Yeah well a GOOD dual lamp is usually around 320+ nits. I haven't seen a single lamp being that high. If the CMO would have just fit, it would be the perfect notebook to me.

There all pin compatible as Zfactor went over this and you will be using the old inverter . My screen is rated@290+ nits and is much brighter all the time then the M17x is as i have them both side by side.

You dont need a dual bulb screen to go back in there as you would only be using one of the 2 plugs available for powering the screen.

I have replaced many screens over the years in my XPS 17inchers and they were and are still the same exact style as there using now .

My M17x screen is very nice unlike Malignant had but i just dont like the Auto contrasting period.

He actually did awhile ago and confirmed that they were the exact same pin layout etc and im sure he will chime in on this thread again explaining how the pin layout has not changed in many years.

The inverters always stay with the machine and you dont use the ones that might be supplied with the screen in my case with the LG i had to dremel off 2 brackets and one held the inverter for a XPS 1730 i believe(my 4th screen now i had to do like that) .
