So I'm pretty much wondering exactly what the title says. I have a large HDTV in my basement, but it's quite old and doesn't have the newest inputs... I'm hoping I can somehow use it as a display for my computer (for gaming, not for general use as it's only 1080i and text looks quite awful on it) since it is 55" rather than my 32" TV that supports HDMI. Is there a way to output video from my M17x to an HDTV that doesn't have an HDMI or VGA (or display port) input? The TV only has Component/YPbPr (R/G/B cables) and standard (yellow/white/red) video inputs.

I've seen cables/adapters while searching online that seem like they would work, such as this one, but I've also heard that something like that wouldn't work (the one I linked to even says: "Note: This cable is NOT designed to work in anyway with a computer's input or output." but maybe some similar cable could?) and that I would need some sort of converter, like this.

So does anyone know if these would work with the M17x? The converter says it is for PC to TV use, but will the computer recognize it? What I mean is will the computer know it is hooked up to a TV and output a signal - since especially with HDMI it seems the computer needs to know that both ends are hooked up to something, and it can even get the name of the display you're hooked up to.

If not these, does anyone know some other way to accomplish this? If the converter works, I might consider it but it seems a bit expensive especially just for a 720p signal... any cheaper solutions?

    Thanks

    Bump....

After searching around some more I found this post:
Does this mean it isn't possible? Does 'adapter' mean a box like the one I linked to or something like the cable?

If VGA won't work is there some sort of HDMI or display port solution?

It's been quite a while so I'm bumping this again. Anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT - This topic was created way before the M17x subtopic was created, mods please feel free to move it

the only adapter that will work is HDMI to Dvi. u might be able to get a dvi to component adapter but it may not work. doesn't really seem worth it imo
