So, I finally found myself able to afford a really good laptop, and ordered an M17x from the Dell outlet on Saturday.

The only spec I cared about was the 6990m, since I am confident in my ability to (fairly) cheaply upgrade almost anything else on the laptop. Everything aside from the gpu is pretty much the baseline.
    It cost $1289+shipping.

Now today I find that Dell has an outlet sale of 25% off AW laptops until the 28th.

My question is: Do I cancel the order and hope that another system with the 6990m shows up before the sale is over (and potentially save $300), or be happy with the price I got.
(FYI, the laptop hasn't shipped yet, so I'm pretty sure I could cancel it without any issues.)

1289 isnt a bad deal with the 6990. If it doesnt have a 1080p screen I would cancel and try to find that option also (this is just my opinion as the 1080p is a deal breaker for me). You are paying about what I did for my system with a discount so deal looks good.

I believe some have be able to call and get the discount applied to previous ordered systems. This may be hit or miss depending on what rep you get.

As long as you the 1920x1080 + 6990, ur pretty much set. Though its seriously hit and miss on re-ordering. And there's a chance you won't get the 6990 again.

The price was very good they tend to raise the prices for the sales and the units get thinned out quick.. Be happy you got what you wanted or you could end up with wishing you still had it. Enjoy! ;)

Oh and they can replace the 1600 w/ the 1920 screen if you want. Kind of pricey though.

Thanks for the feedback, folks. I am inclined to just stick with what I have. I already ordered 8gb of 1600mhz ram, and a 750gb HD (I already have 120gb ssd for boot+games).

The laptop does have the 1600x900 panel, but I am awaiting the results of this guy's experiment to see if I am likely to be able to upgrade it myself.
If not, I will probably go for the regular full-lid part (Dell says they are out of stock at the moment...)

Do you buy the extended warranty yet? I strongly suggest you do :). I have my xps M1710 with 4 year warranty and i had to replace the motherboard 4 time and fans 4-5 times.

Sadly, now my m1710 is dying and it is time to buy a new laptop i guess :(

I think that is a pretty good price for what you got. In my experience when they do those sales, all of sudden mysteriously only these expensive rigs show up, if they show up at all.

When I was looking, before grabbing mine last month, and the outlet had a really nice discount going on, I couldn't find one to save my life. After the sale was over, lo and behold a bunch popped up! Go figure. And even tho they had specs (some the exact same) similar to systems offered for ~1500 they were 150 to 300 bucks cheaper o_O. I think you got a nice price personally!

Guess I will have to make a specs sig at some point now.

$1289 is a good price for a system with the 6990m. From what I have seen, usually those systems are $1500 and higher.

I would not buy a laptop without a 1080p display. CPUs and GPU are easy to upgrade, and it is easy to sell the old part. The screen on the other hand, is not cheap, is not easy, and the old one is next to worthless when it comes to resale value. The 1080p screen is a must. I would cancel the order and wait for one with a 1080p screen.

We have almost exclusively dell on my business network and I have few at home as well. You can purchase a warranty after you purchase laptop. Heck you can purchase one after the included year has lapsed. Just be ready for the price. It's in the hundred for one comparable to what it ships with. Maybe more because it is an AW after all.

Go to support.dell.com, click on drivers and download, enter your services tag, click the warranty tab and roll through the options available to get a price based on your needs.
