    Hey guys,
Need a bit of help with my old m17x r2.
The problem is really simple, the notebook freeze solid with no particular pattern.
It can be when i open Steam or Chrome just after bootup or it can happen when I am in a text document.
The screen stays on with the image but sound, animations etc. stop instanly.
I cant type on the keyboard or use the mouse everything just crash.
The only think i can do is just restart the computer to resolve the problem and get the same crash again after a few minuttes.
I just replaced my 7970m back with 5870m x-fire because the 7970m broke.
Does this have anything to do with it? Any ideas for a fix? :)

do you monitor your temperatures CPU and GPU?

Could it be your GPU not getting enough cooling?

This will be hard to ascertain.
Possibly a loose connection where you replaced the cards.
Trace back what repairs you did and look for any anomalies.

    Good luck

Disable Crossfire in CCC, see if it fixes it, if it does reseat the cable.
If that doesnt help, you might be looking at a 1 dying gpu....

Computer works fine with only 1 card. I turned off X-fire in CCC and had no problems with the computer freezing.
So it must be the X-fire setup. I will try to reset the x-fire cable and see if it works..

Okay guys so the freeze problem remains even with one card now.
I don't know what to do now. Can it be software related, or could it even be something else than the video cards?
    plz help.

Try with one ram module at a time.
    Good luck.

Test your ram and Hard drive, don't know if the builtin test is any good and hot to use it so i always use my linux Live CD for ram testing, i believe it uses Memtest86+
and for Hard drive try Hard disk setinel for Smart info and ViVard for surface test of bad sectors.

The PSA (built in test) should get any HDD or Mem errors (if you run the extended one). Let us know if that throws any errors.

I had some spare ram that I know works. I tried them in the system, the problem still persist.
How do I take/use this PSA test?

Okay so the problem is slightly different now guys. For some reason the only time I get the freeze now is when i push the hardware.
I don't have any more issues with the system freezing on me in small task like browsing anymore. However I can't eksplain why.
Mostly when the computer locks it is when playing games like CS:GO and DmC. But the system don't freeze in games like Diablo 3.
Which is even more wierd becuase that games is also demanding when i run it on max.
Could it be software related? or should i consider it to be a hardware problem?
    drivers? steam?

    Anyone? :)
