Well that's some good news :). I know it's difficult to buy anything from dell that is not on your model list, takes a bit of work.

I'd leave the tape in place. It's supposed to be outside the core area but a different core might be slightly different (why I was asking about the old one).

If you now have the correct heatsink just assemble and go as-is :D

I just left their phase changing paste on and went with it. All problems solved :D

Let us know the temps ;)

I have just started the system, uninstalled ATI stuff, installed 313.96 drivers and everything seems to be workin almost flawlessly.

I have just tried a 3dmark full run, minimum temp was 58 and maximum was 67 degrees celsius ( all with stock paste :) ).

It just seems, that am unable to see external displays until windows boots up (ie. to see a BIOS and POST stuff on external displays).

That's excelent temps, you have room to push a little .

It sounds like the bios is now ignoring an external display and until the win driver loads, then it sees it? Nothing to worry about as long as you can still see it on the internal.

Now's the time to get some gaming in and set some base data. See what games push it the hardest and see what OC'ing can do :D :D

    right then, quick q..

I can flash my card now - so I flashed it with a clevo modded bios and I'm able to flash no problem...

However, once I open nVidia Inspector I get the bios followed by [INVALID]... I thought I'd made a mistake and so reverted back to my backed up bios. I then thought I should try the Dell modded bios yet I cant flash with that as it comes up with board ID mismatch...

I am now just using my backed up bios - but does that mean my card is neither Clevo or Dell?? Or is the [INVALID] after flashing with modded Clevo bios normal??

    Thanks!!

I've always seen a mismatch error when flashing NV and was told to OK through it, and did. Can you (your call!), or is there no option?

I can do it fine with the Clevo bios, but the Dell one I can't even force it through....

Oo-er, never heard of that problem :(. I was always under the impression that the manufacturer of the BIOS only related to features. I would have expected to have heard of this but it does kinda make sense if there are other minor HW differences (like the mem amount)

     ...

That's perfectly normal, invalid shows due to the modified vbios.(Clevo 680m - 80.04.33.00.10_'OCedition'_revised_01 http://forum.techinferno.com/genera...modified-clocks-voltage-tweaks.html#post23432 current gaming OC 915/2000 stock voltage)

Yeah that's why we type "y" twice to confirm, but "invalid" has nothing to do with it.

Don't force a Dell vbios flash with a clevo card, use the clevo vbios mod. and remember to reboot after flashing. http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/672230-m17x-r3-680m-compatability-70.html#post9079374

Wow, max temp of 82 on Crysis 3, max settings and o/c'd.
Just ran 3D Mark 11, scored 7137 with a max temp of 69 and the same o/c's as used in Crysis 3.

Sorry guys, another day another problem:

Just an FYI for you but I tested it on Tomb Raider today and it had no effect - did get around a 5fps gain in Crysis 3 though :D

    Thanks again!

Yeah better written or no sleep functions timeouts.

    Crysis 3 default 10.001 ms
    3DMark11 1.001 ms
    Dragon browser 1.001 ms
    IE 10 4.001 ms
Check out Tomb Raider with timer resolution gui alt/tab.

I was using the gui version. I'll check it out again tomorrow with both, just in case I made some boo-boo :(

    So, quick dumb question -

I have a 680m coming to replace the wife's dead 580m. I know what i need to do for the drivers, but is the unlocked BIOS also required?

If you have the R3, which I assume you do, then yes. You will need to disable the integrated graphics. Unless, of course you have the 120Hz display, in which case its already disabled and you will lose 3D capability.
