So... is there any specific reason why you mentioned svl7's vbios or was it just to spell the name right for me?
Also, is there any chance you could upload those files i need here? I still have no access to downloading files on TI (which is kinda annoying)
    thanks!!!

Unlocked BIOS, vBIOS all modded by him. You need 5 quality posts or T|I Elite Membership ($5) for immediate download rights. A little appreciation for his hard work... :)

not that I mind getting ripped off with $5 bucks membership, but I got 8 posts already. What qualifies those as "quality posts" I wonder? no explanation on the forum whatsoever.

I'l get back to u with how the vbios mod works! a year ago I had exactly the same problem with stuttering, not so strong tho, but after flashing vbios it dissapeared.... why would it come back in a more severe form.

Quick update: as I mentioned in the pm, it turned out I have that Dell-680M-80.04.33.00.32__ocedition_revised_00 already. Any other options I can try?

You don't know the amount of hours invested behind these mods (5 quality posts). Ripping-off, fakers stealing and even profiting from.

Since v340.43 nvidia no longer supports NVCUVENC encoder 600/700/800 GPUs.
    Try this mod for both NVCUVENC & NVENC support (Latest nvcuvenc.dll -> #307 nvdmi.inf_v340.52_nvcuvenc.dll_New) -> M17x R3 GPU upgrade to gtx 780m - Page 31

    Disable driver signing Win8/8.1.

    cmd (admin) Winkey+X
    Code:
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
-> reboot -> F8 -> select "disable driver signature enforcement" -> install drivers.

Hey guys, I'm having trouble installing the latest modified drivers you posted here and I also grabbed the 344.75/.80 drivers from laptoptogo site.

This is on my M17X R3 with an 680m on Win 8.1.

The driver proceeds to install but then fails entirely.

I did recently have a driver installed, but uninstalled in trying to figure out why my HDMI input was giving me that flash crap when I initially fixed it, remembered I did that on Win 7. So I attempted it again.

I can't remember what I did to get the damn drivers installed.

I'm going to try disabling driver sign enforcement and see if that helps.

Any other input would be appreciated.

Also I'm having trouble installing synaptics drivers and I follow the OSD install to the T but the specialized keys for volume ect. aren't working.

    Thanks guys.

    EDIT

Disabling driver signing enforcement worked for both drivers, woot, haha.
Still though, any insight into the OSD and my specialized keys (volume, disc eject, ect) not working, any help is welcome.

Hi all, New here but not to messing around with PC's
My Alienware M17x R3 120Hz 3D with a GTX580m GFX card that has finally died so I have looked through this forum....till my head is spinning - lol

Could any kind person tell me the following wen they have a moment:

What card should I put into replace the GTX580m that will be the easiest to install and set up - is it the 680 or the 780?
Did anyone ever manage to get the 3D working? ( I believe its not on the accepted list in the M/B Bios)
Where do I go for the Modified Driver I believe, With a modified . INF file? And how upto date Is this kept?
What parts of Nvidas Huge driver install package do you actually recommend me installing?

sorry if these have been answered before, but I have gone though the forum and some of the post are really very old now (I am already on the A12 bios from ages ago when I had throttling/ overheating problems that turned out to be blocked heatsink fins - lol)

    many thanks

Hi there, welcome to NBR :).

to start, laptops are so proprietary that you can't often draw parallels with desktops. I have been building desktops since the 286 and the R3 was my first venture into upgradeable laptops. A painful learning curve but I've pretty much cracked what is possible on the R3 and R4.

The 680m or the 780m require the same amount of effort to use in an R3.
3D will not work because as you say it's some sort of bios based authentication that only includes cards sold with a model.
The modified .inf file needed for the installer to see the card can be got from LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers. They keep up-to-date and often have versions that never went public.
I install all the package as I like to test. Even GFEeperience works great for me.

120hz will work and as you have the 3D model (no optimus) you don't need to mess with the bios at all. The only problem I am aware of with the R3 is when using a 780m. Some people had the on-board sound gimp and it is a real pain to fix.
Your 580m heatsink is fine for both these cards and just the padding needs research. I copped out and bought a genuine 680m one for the R4 from dell. At less than £50.00 it comes all padded and pasted ready to assemble. If you can get the x-bracket with the card do that. It ensures the correct pressure.

i am very happy with the 680m. It overclocks like a demon and runs cool.

    Good luck ;).

heard 980m is a beast and as easy to install as the 680m. but with a whopping 780 desktop performance, even comparable to 970 desktop?

Not in an R3 IIRC. It does not have win 8 bios options (UEFI) so nobody has managed it. Win 8 appears to be a pre-requisite for the 980 to work (although it's very confusing reading the thread Going to test clevo 980m in alienware m17x R4, m18x R2, AW17 - HUGE thread.

Thank you for your reply - its been helpful and its nice to know this thread is still supported :)
So i have three options really:

    1. Buy a replacement GTX580m (my ones lasted two and a bit years) and either keep it - it has a 250gb ssd and the high speed crucial ram in it (cant remember without looking now as i fitted when the laptop was new)

    2. Buy a replacement GTX580m and try and sell the laptop as is with the 3D capability and buy a newer Alienware

3.Buy and fit a 680m or 780m Loose the 3D (and maybe loose re sale-abilityas its not as originally brought?) and keep the laptop and use it for a few more years of gaming?

Also the GTX680m comes in a 4 Gig version - will this be seen/work ok ?

If you or anyone could comment on the above it will really help me Decide as realisticly its a big Spend out.....Also which would You go for - the 680 or the 780 for best performance/value .(also seen GTX880m 8Gig for sale - will that work?)

Also sorry to add another thought into the equation....(see i said my head was exploding.....<grin> )
I am also an early supporter of a forthcoming space game "Star Citizen" dont know if your familier with it, but do you think any of these combination will cope well with it?
also how upgradeable is the CPU? (I have an i7 in it at the moment (forgotten which one but it will be down the lower end)

and another(sorry) If I fitted and R4 motherboard at some point would the 680/780m then allow 3D again?

    You're welcome.

    1. That will be your cheapest option and as long as you don't try to overclock it you should get a similar lifespan. It would be safest to find an old driver that works well and stick with it. Driver updates are usually a trigger to a 580m failure. If you use GF Experience then it can update the game profiles and leave the driver alone - if set up correctly.

    2. A definite possibility but 3D has got a bad rep so it's not going to be a big selling point.

    3. This one for me. Resale should only be higher for anyone that researches or follows alienware. A 120hz display AND a 680m/780m, it's fully sorted!

I'm of course biased since I've never used a 780m but all my research said that the 680m could overclock very well and match 780m numbers (It does overclock over 30% and still runs under 75c :D).

Can't verify this but the 780m does appear to run quite a bit hotter. The 680m has a much longer in-service time and I've not seen any failures (or 780m ones) so reliability is solid.

I'm so happy with it it's not changing any more. I'm getting one of the new R2's to see if they have got the 980m to perform, rather than upgrade. I also like the 3D a LOT and the 680m on my R4 works just fine :D.

As for the game, it looks like it will stretch a card but nothing I saw that the 680m couldn't cope with easily. It uses a common engine as well. Quote:' The development of the game started in 2011 on a modified version of the CryEngine 3 game engine, later updated to the 4th generation'. From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Citizen.

Hope that helps sort out your dilemma :p

Addendum to your addendum: Yes an R4 motherboard would make the 680m fully plug and play, not so for the 780m. You would need a CPU as well though as they are a diferent family.

    Hi MickyD,
Well I took all you had to say into account, and you have been very helpful and patient with me.
I just brought a GTX780m 4gig £319 - not a great deal more than I would have to pay for the 580's that are available in the uk or China ( american stuff is plentiful but dear especially with the duty on it).
The eBay add said its new, their rating is good so we shall see. It comes with the bracket and article silver 5

I will let you know how things go, I liked and Rep'd you....will only let me do it once as I'm still new. Hope you'll still be around in case I have any problems and need a bit of help.

    Cheers

Glad I could help. I'm not planning on going anywhere so just hit me up if you need to and post results anyway ;).

As for that card, good find in the UK. You can ignore all the bios stuff in their instructions. That's for the 60hz display model. The intel GPU is already disabled on the 120hz :D.

Hi Micky, great to know you'll still be around :) and hope your weekends going well
I found out about the disabled on-board GFX long time back...when I looked into why the batteries didn't last long - lol...I'm sure there was no mention of that in the original dell selling bumph, just like the Upgradable Enthusiasts Gaming Laptop...Upgradable not to Inventive and curious gamers who like to push limits...but to Dells "Limited" upgradability...as long as it doesn't affect forced upgrade sales - Bit like apple software updates and "non replaceable" batteries lol....Its a shame they are so short sighted in there long term plans of sales versus customer loyalty by restricting the bios/3D certification and allowing progress...I'm sure people will up grade to new laptops as we all like new tec and I bet the people who go the Max out the GFX card route inbetween buying new ones is pretty small in the world wide scheme of things when compared to brand loyalty and customer satisfaction....still rant over, we've been f'd over - like it or lump it I guess but it is a shame.

My card is due for delivery Wednesday or Thursday (dam I'm like a kid waiting for xmas), Ive found a link with a picture of the thermal pads that lists the different thickness required and Overclockers Uk can supply the required sizes and I'll order them tomorrow....so have no fear, I will keep you/anyone on here up to date with the progress...Might even take some pictures along the way...

One question (lol) They recommend Artic Silver % for the GPU to heatsink - is this good? the best? or do you and the experienced crew on here recommend something different?

    cheers for now

    Good thanks Mark.

In my experience the better pastes give only a couple of C gain, important if you are looking to push the card to it's limits but not so much for the average user. I have Arctic Silver that I used to repaste my CPU. This old review is revealing on the subject of paste comparisons :D : Thermal Compound Roundup - October 2011 | Hardware Secrets

There are liquid metal pastes now available and look very efficient, but if they are conductive care to avoid over pasting will be needed. For this upgrade I just used the pre-applied paste (some sort of semi-hard stuff) that a new heatsink came with. I wanted to know if it was good enough, and it is!

    Good luck :D.

I would stay away from Liquid metal pastes.. Just use IC DIamond and Gelid GC Extreme.. more then good enough.. get some Phobya XT pads and you will be sorted...

Hi to MickyD124 and all :)

    well I've installed the GTX880m in my alienware M17x R3 3D 120Hz screen
sorting out the themal pads was fiddly (still a bit worried but i'll check the temsp one fully running)
I diabled sound and set the gfx in the bios

    Horray...laptop boots again :)
booted into safe mode - Run 3Dguru driver uninstaller/cleaner
booted into windows 7 desktop - vga mode

Now I'm having trouble installind drivers.
I understand I need to use a modded nv_dispay.ini but the drivers - had one go and failed to recognise suitable gfx card

the driver search on laptopvideo2go.com seem awfly out of date ? 2012 ver @304.

so plase can I ask for yet some more help please :)

Hey, you're almost there! Don't bother with the driver search just select the latest one here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers

Win 8 is win 7 as well. As you drill down on the link you get offered the inf file. If you use the same version you have tried you don't need the whole driver, only the inf. The name of this inf changes so just replace the original under c:\nvidia\displaydriver\version\display.driver and run the exe again.

    Good luck.

Just go with it all - always works for me. Also I use gforce experience. Again has a bad rep but I have not seen any specific details pointing at this app, and it works great for updating and having all your game settings visible in one place :D.

EDIT: Just remember to unload any monitoring software like msi afterburner before updating. You should not even be asked for a reboot if nothing is being held open :)

    Hi MickyD134 back again ;-)

I installed the driverfile from laptopvideo2go as you said - I did a clean install
seemed to work ok - hardware list it as a GTX78m ok, I re activated the HD Audio in bios - sound seems ok
HWInfo shows it as a 4Gb GTX 780M ok

but Im worried now as I didnd use the inf file at all form that site (or any other site) yet it all appears to be working

BUT id don't have the Nvidia Icon/ access in my task tray?

Also GPU-Z says the card is sitting at 52 - 54 deg c which seems a bit high? have I not got the thermal pads on correctly/good enough?

any suggestions would be appreciated :)

also what GFX benchmark / tester would you suggest please?

    Thank You

    Mark

ps I cant rep you any more til I rep some other people :-(

Well that is strange, they state their driver files are unmodified so I don't understand how it is working. It is promising though that you might be able to use drivers without modifying.

Install the standalone gfexperience ( http://www.geforce.co.uk/geforce-experience) and see if that fixes it, and also check if a right click on a blank part of the desktop offers the control panel?

EDIT. My personal favourite is Heaven 4 ( https://unigine.com/products/heaven/download/). A true game type benchmark. AW even use this for testing if you call with a graphics problem.

Ok, I downloaded the experience...had an error during install but completed , icon is there , control panel opens from task icon and from the right click desktop - says its a GTX780m ok, screens running at 120hz but the experience program just says a generic Geforce experience encountered an error and must close?

Sounds like some sort of error occured during the installation process. I recommend:

    1. use DDU to strip out all the existing files.
2.download and run the setup from the latest nvidia download. It should fail to run (hardware not found).
    3. download the related inf (same version number) from LV2Go and replace the original under c:\nvidia\...
    4. Install and Enjoy (hopefully)

Hopefully it all works correctly now.

Ok, cheers MickyD I will try that now but then Im off to bed - did try a few other things but no go so I will try what you suggested

it seems that 80 deg c is an acceptable max (card design max limit 95 but you wouldn't want to rn at that) I was more curios as what the idle GPU temp should be about?

will pester you again either way :)
    cheers ad thank you

No problem, we'll catch up tomorrow.
You'll need a 780m user to comment on that temp, but it is one of the reasons I did not go for a 780m. Way too hot for my liking, especially if the padding/pasting is not perfect. That along with no headroom for overclocking as the temp will rise to alarming levels.

Mine idles in windows between 51c and 58c with the minimum fan level maintaining it on and off.

Just to confirm, you are running a 780m in a 120hz R4? The stock driver should not install, although a while ago I had the opposite and had to mod the driver even though it was the dell driver for my GPU .

It might have had temp creep while you was away?

Safe mode and DDU to start again :(

    Seems like the card fried,
Do what Micky suggested above if no avail then contact the seller to get the card replaced.

No it in an M17x R3 120 hz....I was prepared to loose the 3D capability.
Anthe DDU clean was followed by the laptopvideo2 go drivers and they did not need the modified inf to install or for the card to be recognised....can't get safe mode yet...just a flash and black screen

Ah, even less chance of the NV drivers installing. Your windows could be messed up but let's hope it's fixable before going down that path .

Make sure you delete ALL the c:\nvidia files and folders and run the install from there (stock NV driver).

Good luck with safe mode, using win 8? Yeah it takes some research...

It is sounding like card failure though. I have never seen Heaven trash a card, only Furmark. Damn, that sucks
