I have an m17x r3 with a HD6990M GPU. I use a cooler master u3 and the ambient temp is in the low 20's.
Lately I had the impression the gpu fan was going to its highest state quite soon. I checked the temps and idle my GPU is high 50's and under full load it goes to the low 80`s.
Is this too high? It annoys me that the GPU fan goes to high for a simple game like Killing Floor.

Do you guys think my laptop needs a repaste? Do I have to let a Dell tech come do it, or can I without voiding my warranty?

    Thank you very much!

Low 80's arent any thing to worry about I was at around 82c max with the 6990m in my M15x which runs hotter then the M17xR3

Hey Luis, how much would you say is a safe temp for the CPU? Was considering repasting my alien as i hit a max of 83 consistently on the CPU while playing BF3 at auto settings (1080p)....

Edit : And, let me add this is after i raise it with bottlecaps... have given my CoolerMaster SF-19 to a friend for a while; with it, the CPU temps never crossed 80...

83 is not bad while stressed, however, perhaps a quick dust off could bring that number down a bit. Re pasting may be a annoying, but if you have the time and experience I'd definitely go for it :p

Sounds good! Thanks for that info... Neither have the experience nor the time for a total repaste, so a can of compressed air it is then... And at what temp would you say the alarm bells should start ringing? 90s right??

I'd say if you get to the 90s constantly while playing you should definitely consider re pasting

So I ran prime95 with Hardware monitor, my cpu temps were around 50 idling but kicked in to around 88-90 and sometimes jumping to 92-93 is that normal or is that high? I have kept the laptop clean and it was proped up on bottle caps for airflow.

When I run prime95 the CPU stays at 100% as soon as i cancel the test the temps quickly drop down to 50s. Would re pasting void my warranty? I am currently in Afghanistan right now, so when I get back I will do it. All the paste we have out here is the cheap stuff, I use to repair government laptops. That crap is not going touch the M17x.

No, repasting does not void warranty. But you have not to broke anything :)
