M17x r3 and aw2310 problems

i have an aw2310 thats been hooked up with hdmi for a while now. finnally bit the bullet and bought the powered displayport to dual link dvi adapter. also had to buy a diplayport to mini displayport adapter to make it fit the laptop.

i was running windows 8 preview when i hooked it up and everything went great. changed my refresh to 120hz and tried to enable 3d but no go. decided to reboot into windows 7. after reboot i havent been able to get it to run my monitor at all. when i plug it in with displayport it detected that its there but wont give me the option to use it. it says "unable to save display settings" anyone have any ideas? it worked at first, so did something just die on me?

little troubleshooting update:

tried the registry fix that is floating around google but i dont have those registry entries.
i also have a displayport to hdmi adapter that doesnt work and a displayport to dvi adapter that doesnt work.
did my displayport go out?

when the powered adapter is connected i can go to device manager and it shows it listed as a monitor.

more troubleshooting update:
had a friend bring over his laptop with a displayport and all three adapters worked as they should. im leaning toward this being a displayport problem on my alienware.
