Hey all, been messing with this for a good 30 minutes now and I'm stumped. I've got my xbox plugged in via HDMI to the r3 but when I flip it to HDMI I see a flash of the xbox screen for a brief moment and then my entire screen goes black. I've tried 3 different cables all which work going into my TV and another external display but the r3 refuses to display HDMI input. It's passing sound through just fine though as I can hear it cycling through the menus when I press the controller.

Anyone experienced this before? Running the m17x r3 with 580M and 120hz display.

Not sure. When I plug my ps3 in, it just works. Although signal cuts out if I wiggle my cable. Might need to buy new ones.

Went out and bought a 1080p 120hz HDMI cable from best buy... still the same deal. Plug it in, xbox screen flashes for a moment and then it just goes black and all I get is audio. Cable outputs just fine to my secondary monitors HDMI in so I'm guessing my HDMI input is bugged on the laptop.

Have you got any improvment? mine only works if i restart windows with PS3 already on and plugged on HDMI in. If i try to switch back to windows and back again to HDMI screen, it flashes black, and i can still hear the sound

I'm having the same problem on the 560m. Recently installed beta 285 driver for 3d vision maybe that has something to do with it?

i`m with the same driver. Using the early driver, it sometimes worked fine, sometimes not... Ive already tried to disable 3D vision, but it`s still the same...
please, if someone finds any solution, post here! I saw in other post that it may be a power saving configuration, as the Windows puts the screen on sleep mode as we plug HDMI device on HDMI-IN. So I checked my power savings configuration, and there`s nothing wrong... it`s set as maximum performance...

I haven't had a chance to ring up Alienware tech support as I've been swamped with work but it could be a display driver issue as I am running the BF3 beta drivers on my 580m right now.

I had this problem about the same time as you did, and after almost driving myself crazy, i finally found out it was the drivers. for Nvidia drivers, any 285.xx drivers won't work with HDMI in, whether from dell, laptopvideo2go, or nvidia's verde. i dropped it down to 280.36 drivers, and the HDMI in worked again. If dropping down to 280.xx drivers don't work, try uninstalling drivers first, then use driver sweeper, restart, and reinstall 280.xx drivers again. Hope this helps!

Hmmm... hopefully nvidia corrects that. I'll have to get a bug logged with them about this being broken in the 285 drivers as I'd rather not roll back to 280.xx.

Thanks for the assistance 02kool9292, +rep!

Ive posted on nvidia forums about the issue to no response because i too dont want to be held back on old drivers. If you find one of the new ones works be great if you could message me or post on here. Thanks again Jagged, ur a lege.

I actually have the same problem as you guys, so I called Alienware support. I told them HDMI-IN worked just fine on the stock driver, but not on the 285.62 driver on their website. They told me that it was a beta (already knew that) and that they were working on a new one as I was speaking. He told me it would be out by mid-February to March... at least I hope he's right lol.

    Hey Guys,

I have the exact same problem with my HDMI out and HDMI in. When I connect my M17R3 to my LCD TV through the HDMI out, the display works fine, but very very unstable and even with the slightest of slightest shakes to the cable or the laptop position, the signal will be lost.
When I connect my PS3 to my laptop through the HDMI in, the screen will go black for a few seconds (3 out of 5 times) and then go back to my desktop. The remaining 2 out of 5 times, nothing happens at all. I recently contacted Alieware tech support and they turned out to be the most inefficient techs I've ever spoken to. The tech I spoke to first told me that this was a third party problem and nothing to do with Alienware! Can you believe this Just because I was connecting a third party peripheral into the laptop, Alienware doesn't care if the laptop will work with it or not? I asked him why then does Alienware have this feature of being able to connect with and to third party peripherals? He had no answer for me and said, "Since this has to do with a gaming peripheral, only the Gaming Department can support my case." I told him, this has nothing to do with any gaming peripherals alone, since I'v ethe same problem with my TV with the HDMI out, and with other devices such as a digital camera through the HDMI in. He insisted that I be forwarded to the Gaming Department, so I agreed. Now this Gaming Department's self-claimed "Special Operations Tech" or something, had no clue on where the problem was, and told me that if the problem was with the hardware then my warranty would cover the replacement and/or repair but if the problem was with the software, then I'd have to pay for the support and repair. Now the best part about this is, for them just to find out where the problem lies, I'd have to pay apparently! This is complete BS IMO, I spent almost three thousand dollars on a laptop and I expect it to work, why should I have to pay to make something work that was supposed to work in the first place. I asked to be transferred to a Manager, but he put me on hold for such a long time and transferred me back to Tech Support, and I asked the third tech to forward me to the Gaming Department Manager. A dude called Eddy, who was the manager I spoke to, was very cocky and non-empathetic. He tried to use silly logic and expected me to get confused because of his use of unwarranted and meaningless tech jargon, but basically what he was trying to tell me was the exact same thing as the second tech. I told him I don't want to spend any more money on the laptop, especially when it's under warranty and when it's the company's fault for releasing or allowing a non-functioning feature in the laptop. I kept insisting that I'd have to pay, but I told him that I'd be happy if he just told me where the problem was and he denied! I was flabbergasted and told him that I'll find out the solution myself and hung-up. This was my worst experience with any customer support team in my life!
Anyway, sorry for the long rant, but I wanted people out there to be aware of how inefficient and useless the Alienware tech support is.
I've not tried JaggedXEDGEX's fix yet, but I shall when I go back home from work. If anyone else has tried it, let me know your experience.

interesting. Yea i it worked for me, i had the exact same issue you did badbasher with the HDMI IN. got the above modded driver installed and worked fine altho it bugs the sh!t outa me that im using an old driver to do so. So anyway yea, a couple of days ago i "liked" nvidia on facebook and few hours later they advertised theyre brand new beta 295.51 driver. i already knew this was released as id tried a thousand drivers trying to get this to work. So on the comment section i told them that for or the actual release of the full driver itd be nice for the HDMI IN part of the driver to be working. I never expected them to get back to me but they did saying they too have an m17x R3 with a ps3 and HDMI IN works fine....... so i tried the 295.51 driver again... and yea u guessed it, it doesnt work...... im going to let them know this after ive posted here and i guess ill post the response if any after.

Have any of you guys tried 3D with this driver? It kept crashing the computer for me so I used alien respawn to bring it back to factory defaults. Reinstalled the drive first when I got it back up and tried out the 3D and... for whatever reason it's doing red/blue 3D instead of activating the glasses. I'm trying to engineer a solution using custom install to get only the graphics driver then getting the 285.whatever driver's 3D driver, but I wanna know if the problem is unique to me. Can anyone with the glasses check it out? Just run the setup wizard really quick.

ive got 3D mate and mine works fine. i can switch from any driver to any and its all good. just installed the new WHQL nvidia driver 295.53 or w/.e it is and shock shock, doesnt support hdmi in. what really bugs me is that the guys at nvidia have the same comp as me with all the new drivers and theirs works. if theres a genius out there who can solve this riddle id be impressed. the problem is too common for it to be an isolated incident!

I have no idea how they got the HDMI in working. I wish they would give us some guide to how they got it setup, because I couldn't deal with the old drivers not supporting 3D and moved up to the newest release. But it bugs me so bad that I can't use the HDMI in. They gotta have some other nvidia program installed on their laptops that lets it work properly.
