Taken from a post on the Dell forums:

Here is a list for the video cards that are compatible with your system and give you a better performance.

    - Nvidia:

    GTX 460

    GTX 560

    GTX 580

    - AMD Radeon:

    HD 6990

    HD 6970

These shouldn't require any mods (heatsink, modded inf for drivers etc...). Notice that I used "shouldn't". I don't have an R3 and I'll leave actual owners of that model here confirm that.
People DID however upgrade to more recent GPU's (680m,780m etc...) but these DID require the mods I mentioned above, and the 240W power supply.

I appreciate the response but I'm accually looking to DOWNGRADE, not upgrade. Are there any gpus that are a plug and play downgrade. For example, would a gtx 260m be direct plug and play for the r3

Well how cheap are we talking? The first 3 I listed are pretty old and (if you find them) should be pretty cheap already. Why would you want to downgrade even further?

I just want to get it working so I can sell it. And spend the least amount of money possible doing it. The 460m is still $100+

How much are you looking to sell? I may be interested, without a GPU at all. I could trade you a working M15x with a working GPU for your non-working M17x R3, or outright purchase if it is cheap enough
