Sold an older r3 to someone and they are telling me the bluray won't play movies. It has the drive BD etc and I followed the batboy fresh install thread. Got me thinking does bluray require a media player to play it that comes on the resource DVD perhaps? I've always had blurays but I've never used them once so I never ran into this situation personally.

When I did a fresh install on my R4 it would play dvd but not blu ray so I had to go to the dell website and download cyberlink PowerDvD9 from the dell website and now it works fine. My laptop originally came with it so it was a free download. The R3 should have either the same program or one similiar. Go to the dell website and type in the service tag and see what programs were factory installed.

Figured it was Sonething like that. So there's nothing on the resource DVD? Will vlc? Figured I'd ask since I'll be putting that on anyways.

No they do not put it on the resource dvd but I think they should. Also it limits your service tag to 3 downloads of it before you have to purchase the program. So after my first download I saved the complete file with installer on flashdrive and spare hdd so I can get them instantly if needed. Never tried vlc for it. But the download was simple enough and only took a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the reply! I can't seem to download it via the website.. Any chance you can link me where the software is generally? I'd imagine it's under support?

Go to dell.com Click on the Technical support link at the top of the page. In the upper left part of the screen next to the dell logo mouse over Driver and Downloads the click Dell Software Download Center then click on the My Dell Downloads. You will have to register if you are not already registered and you should find all the software your computer originally came with. Or all the software it should have had from the factory.

If not you can download software from Arcsoft. They have discount codes on retailmenot.com. I believe it is around 70 bucks for the bluray software. Better than Cyberlink IMHO.
