    Hello.
Can any one give me some good ideas how to best determine if my card packed up?

In bios its named ati gfx I think.
Running Intel card at the moment.

Failing to install drivers. Laptop freezes if I do.

Before I deleted drivers, if I nf+f7 and reboot.
Laptop would fail to start bios. No beeps.

I must remove small battery to reset bios and force into safe mode to enable Intel card.

If ati card is dead. Can I buy gtx 980m from China?
    60hz screen.

    Thx for any reply .

Seems dead, the 7970M/8970M/M290X MXM cards always where the unstable bunch.
    A 980M from Taobao/Alie would work with a 60HZ Screen yes

Im not sure if i can reuse the ones from 7970. And i have no idea what thickness pads i need.

Don't reuse them, place the pads on the VRM's and RAM chips

The VRMs are the big square shaped parts on the card, on the 980m they are mainly named "R22". They need to get padded so they have good contact with the heatsink as they can get very hot.

1 and 1,5 mm is the main thickness needed for the pads to be.

“Unstable” you say? Only early 7970M suffered from 28nm process teething issues. Late 7970M, 8970M, and R9 M290X are perfectly good cards. All my examples are still working.

OP if your 7970M just died, consider that a very good lifespan from a GPU. I would recommend replacing with a 980M or 1070 MXM

Yes unstable, all of them where either HW flawed or had awful drivers from quite literally everyone I've ever talked to, and its literally only been those cards, my 8950M's have been flawless as well as my newer cards

Mmmmm a little out of date on the information. 7970M surpasses 680M and almost reaches 780M levels of performance with today’s drives. Meanwhile Nvidia gimps whatever is not current gen. Your information may have been valid in 2012 but certainly not 2019. 980M SLI barely hits 17K now on newest drivers, I had to roll back to 2 year old drives to go back to breaking 18K.

I had this laptop since 2014 and never had any issues. Sadly the card give up. Hope nvidia wont cause any problems with heat.

Thats not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about the instability of the drivers actually installing. Assuming you can get them working, a 7970M should handily beat a 680M and match if not come close to the 780M. However, many have had issues installing newer drivers, which is what I'm referring to. There's no doubt that AMD's GCN Finewine plan has payed off in the long wrong, but the Tahiti series of mobile cards have really been slacked off on driver wise. My info is certainly valid just by browsing a couple of threads.

980M is a very hot card, make sure you get high quality thermal pad (gelid thermal pads are good, get 1.0mm size) and high quality thermal compound (master gel maker is my preference)

Had a 7970m running in my m17x r3, had bought it second hand and sold it sm. month ago, I presume it should still be running and doing well.
Had no probs installing the latest drivers (without any modding nonsense).
    Think they aren't that bad.

They aren’t bad cards at all, so long as you don’t have early version cards. AMD drivers have come a long way since 2012

Its now 5 years of R9 M290X on this thing.
Far from beeing something best, I cant say I'm dissapointed.
    Still runs!
That's 5 years with probably more than 4 years of constant everyday use, mild to heavy.
Did a repaste after two years (stock crap was awfull) with ICD7 and it was much better.
The other day I put Kryonaut and its great.
Should replace thermal pads and I was wandering what are the pads correct thickness?
True problem is not infact the card, its DAMN CRAPPY fan profiles.
Im on stock a14 bios and the fan gets to 3200rpm!? Thats just CRAP!
I dont want to use hwinfo coz I dont trust it.
Im going pwm wire cut way one of these days when I get that turbo fan in.
I get 74c max on these hot days and I think its pretty ok.

1.0mm pad size should be good enough for the memory and phases

Good to hear that Aliexpress seemed to work out. I've never ordered from there but have always wondered how legit the sellers are
