Hi, my old laptop was the Dell studio 16 xps and I had a full hd 16" rgb led edge to edge display which was fantastic. I've noticed that the blacks on my r4 are pretty dull and aren't very 'black' either.
Is this due to the wled display over the rgb?
Since its my main entertainment machine which I use for watching all my tv shows and movies too, I think it's a shame Dell didn't choose to put a rgb screen in.

The 1080p screen on the M17x R4 covers 100% SRGB and is 72% color gamut. Blacks are good and contrast ratio is also good. If that isn't good enough then you are SOL.

I forget if the alienwares use a standard 40pin connector, if they do there are 90% gamut panels available to upgrade yourself.

To answer to your question in general wled means LCD screen with white LED backlight, hence W LED. Picture is displayed on the LCD screen and behind it you have LED backlight (they are assembled as 1 unit though). Older LCD displays are using CCFL backlight, which is not as bright or energy efficient. If you turn off the backlight you will still see the picture if you bring the display close to any source of light.
RGB LED screen is using lit LEDs to form the picture. There is no need for any backlight source here. Now this has one big advantage, which you have already noticed - better blacks. Reason being, where you need to display black in RGB LED screen, pixels are simply turned off and the rest of the picture can still be displayed. When it comes to LCD it has to have the backlight at all times to display the picture. So even where you need black in the picture, that area still has to be backlit as there is no way to turn the backlight off for specific areas. -
