My new m17x r4 has started to shut down after connecting something to the left USB ports.

A month ago, the same problem happened to all ports but I reinstalled some drivers and worked fine until yesterday.

Now, everytime I try to connect the mouse or my HDD the laptop shuts down... Any solution?

    Thank you :)

There may be a short in the motherboard. You can try doing a system restore to take it back a couple of days ago also.

I installed my new SSD and did a clean install of Windows 8.

This is the error that appears when I try to connect a USB (sometimes the laptop shuts down).

It's in Spanish but more or less says that "USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port".

    Thank you.

What are you plugging into the USB port anyways?

The eSATA/usb port is the only one which will output 2A, the rest will only be 1A, hence you can only charge an ipad or somehting power hungry using the eSATA/usb port. Using the other usbs will charge it slightly slower.

    Yes, I speak Spanish :D
I did what the guy says but doesn't fix anything!

It only happens in the left USB ports. I plug into the USB port my mouse, an external HDD or the gamepad and always appears the error or the laptop shuts down.

    Thank you.

If Dell includes any diagnostics you could try those, but if you've ruled out a driver issue, I'd assume it's hardware.

That's pretty much it, I believe that the issue might be related to hardware at this point.

Hmm, USB 3.0 drivers that can be found on Dell's web are only for Windows 7.

I've got Win8 and can't install the drivers!

Looks like w windows crash, I'm running windows 8, my left side looks ok. If it was a hardware short I doubt windows would have enough time to create a dump, but im not 100% sure.

Have you installed the windows 8 chipset driver?

I have reinstalled Windows 8 and the problem persists. I installed Windows 7 too and when I plugged into the USB the screen went crazy and had to restart the laptop :(

strange problem as Windows 8 supports USB 3.0 right out of the box. Hope the new mobo fixes it for you!! and if its a refurb it shouldn't be to big of a deal. I've had 2 other mobo's replaced in mine and they were both refurbs and work fine. :)

But life cycle will be shorter if it is refurb or not?

I have paid 2000€ for the laptop... I bought it 2 months ago and now I have to install a used mobo...

    :(
