Currently I have an alienware m17x r5 wtih a gtx 770m with a 4700mq cpu, wondering If I can install an old 5xx or 4xx series card in there granted it's the same MXM version slot?

I am not sure anyone ever tried, but if you have a card laying around why don't you try and tell us. If not, I don't see a reason why you want one of these cards as their prices are pretty hight due to lack of availability.

I only have an 870m, 675m laying around. I want to downgrade to a 460m ($70) so I can still do graphic intensive task like rendering.

    The 870m should work fine

    That's not a downgrade......
I'm selling those parts and have no intention of installing them in my alienware, hence the post. More interested if someone installed older 5xx, and 4xx series cards which are far cheaper specialy the x60 and x70 cards.
