Awaiting arrival of my M17x R4, I took out the default 1 year warranty.

Always been lucky with laptops that I have bought in the past as regards reliability....though this is the first time I've purchased such a high end laptop.

I know this is a new revision of the M17x, but in general is it worth taking out the rather expensive 3 years warranty from users past experience?

It really depends, I NEVER buy extended warranties and ive always been lucky in never needing them on any electronic device. The only issue ive had with an Alienware is the hinges on my m11x broke but they replaced them free of charge since it was a defect in the model. If you don't tinker around too much you should be okay but it never hurts to have insurance.

Also keep in mind you can extend your warranty any time after purchase.

Yes but if you go through a good rep you can get the price down a bit. Its a gamble either way.

    Thanks for the input guys.

Just trying to get a balance on any known recurring problems with the M17x line that would make an extended warranty advisable, or on the other hand, if the line is generally rock solid.

General rule of thumb, if you aren't someone who constantly messes with your system then you should be OKAY unless its some freak occurrence which usually happens in the first year that you have the warranty anyway. Also if you are somewhat tech savvy, and your warranty expires, you can always replace parts yourself. Like I said, its a gamble either way. Ive paid for warranties in the past that I NEVER used, so I ended up wasting the extra money spent on it.

I'm on the same boat, thinking about picking up the extended warranty because I take my laptop everywhere.

Purchase with an American Express card and your warranty is automatically increased to two years (Amex extends all warranties 100% with a max 1 year increase).

Another thing to consider...... this is an expensive machine with expensive parts. If you can't afford a few hundred $$$ for extra warranty then you probably can't afford out of pocket repairs either.

If you can afford the warranty then buy it. Piece of mind = good.

Probably end up going with the extended warranty.
Expensive system to skimp on the warranty.

    UK prices....'n all.

Totally agree, throwing the warranty on my Dell preferred account.

In my experience, warranties are close to the top of the list of items a rep has considerable latitude with when negotiating price. Just sayin'.
