I just picked up an m17x r3 the other day its got a i7 2670qm in it with a 500gb hdd. I had just purchased an m14x a couple weeks ago that has a 2760qm with a 750gb hard drive (sata and all that not sure exact specs as im not very tech savy). I bought the 17 for the bigger screen and higher resolution, also has a better gpu. Since i dont need both i was thinking of swapping the cpu's and hd's to really boost my 17. I was mainly doing this because the 2670 doesn't support 1600mhz ram (which i have 24gb of in the 17). Anyway, im telling my buddy about this and he says that he has an i7 2920xm that he would sell me for 150. Im wondering if this would be a big enough upgrade from the 2760 to buy it from him and put it in. Would also save me the hassle of taking the other cpu out of the 14" and putting one back in it... let me know what you guys think.

And if I do put the 2920xm in, would i need to change anything else? Such as heatsink or anything like this?

You can just swap it with the same heatsink.
It's a massive upgrade by the way, and 150 dollars is almost for free basically, so I wouldn't hesitate a second personally.

An XM is made to overclock, so i'd start reading some threads here about that (Throttlestop) to get the most performance out of it :)

Thanks for the input. I decided to go ahead and go for the 2920xm and also nixxed the idea of swapping the hdd's and bought a 256gb samsung 840 pro series SSD. After reading up on the differences i figured this would be well worth the money and I picked up a 500gb wd EDGE passport portable hdd to store all my music, pics, vids and all that good stuff on. Everything should be here by friday which is perfect because thats the first day of my long break i will update after i get everything up and running!!! Very excited.
