Every time I close my lid, M17x goes into sleep mode (which is fine). When I open lid, it stays sleeping. After closing and opening the lid 4 or 5 times, it wakes up. Lately nothing wakes it up. Have to hold down power button to shut unit off. I have the setting at closing the lid does put it in sleep mode but nothing wakes it up. I think it is set to hitting the power button once it should wake it up but it does not. Have to hold it for 10 sec or so for a complete shut down. Face recognition works fine after restarting or after waking up from screen saver but not once the lid closes.

How to I fix this? Thanks

If you post in the Alienware M17x subforum, you might receive faster assistance that is specific to your system.

Make sure you have the newest Bios, and Vbios that should do it.

Need to know if this is an R1 or R2 and what GPU(s) and display driver version.

It shows 4 cores because it's a hyperthreading CPU, 2 cores, 4 threads.

Not charging is a well documented problem...you should try what was mentioned above, updating the bios. R2 is up to A09 I believe. Give it a shot and let us know what happens. Try not to just say you haven't found a solution, let us know what you tried, that will help narrow down possibilities and keep us from repeating ourselves.

I have this problem fairly often if I close the lid. When I open it back up, it sometimes won't come out of sleep. So I simply close the lid again, wait for it to go to sleep and then reopen it and it wakes up. Since I don't close the lid on mine very often it's never really bothered me, but that's how I get out of that state.

Are you sure its not out of sleep? I have a similar problem but the screen is actually just blank. I just click on the area where the icon is and type my password with no screen. It usually logs me right on with the screen back. I'm guessing it has something to do with the GPUs but it really hasn't bothered me enough to look for a fix.

    Try the following:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 Driver
    v 8.763-100810a-104118C-Dell

(NOTE: The VBIOS update listed below does NOT apply to the 4870 GPU. It is only to be used with the 5870)

    Fixes and Enhancements
    1. Displays configuration becomes incorrect when Crossfire is disabled
    2. A non existent 2nd monitor appears in CCC and Display Manager after resume from S3/S4 with CrossFire disabled
    3. System hangs when crossfire is disabled and re-enabled
    4. Driver updates
    5. Support for new game titles

If you enabled Memory OverVoltage (In BIOS), Disable it now and set it to Default. That's the main reason why the Laptop doesn't wake up after Sleep mode.
