I have an Alienware M17x with the following specs.

    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Nvidia Geforce GTX 260m x2 SLI
    Nvidia Geforce 9400
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9000 @ 2.00 GHz
    80gb Samsung SSD
    500gb HDD
    8gb RAM

I recently bought 2x HD5870M with heatsinks and crossfire cable. And when I installed them I couldn't get any drivers from the AMD website to install. So I was stuck with the default Standard Video Graphics when I checked my device manager. So I threw my old GTX 260m x2 back in and now I'm here looking for some help.

Do you mean you weren't getting any results from the Auto Detect tool? If not, try that, though it hasn't always worked for me. Otherwise, when selecting the HD 5870M, the driver page says that the driver is only compatible with third generation Intel CPU's, among other families. Not sure if that will work, but that seems to be the only option they provide.
