Hi all, long time lurker first time poster!

Anyone know if the nVidia 480M is being released for the M17x?

I'm not a big fan of ATI but I do like the looks of the M17x but I want the i7 so the R1 version is out of question.

    TIA!

Well that's the big question isn't it... no one has a clue yet. They havn't announced anything and as it stands the power requirements make it a no go in the current m17x.
They might release a bigger psu and a bios update but atm you guess is as good as mine.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M power requirements is 100 watts and the ATI 5870 is 50 watts. Since the m17x-R2 offers two ATI 5870's Crossfire for a total of 100 watts, the issue is not the power supply.

For SLI 480ms, it is an issue. A huge issue. I doubt we'll see them for a while in this laptop...200 watts just for the graphics cards in a laptop is ludicrous.

the 100W figure isn't set in stone, Initially the TDP of the 5870 was 60W btw, and that's come down to 50W(even though they're probably closer to 65-70W) ;) . Dell even used LV sample 5870s, so we might see something similar happen with the 480Ms. It's unlikely, but anything is possible. The new X7200 is using the magical 300W PSU(and desktop processors), so it's only a matter of availability. I think it could work, it would take a lot to make it happen, but then again Dell took their sweet time with the 5870 release.

I would expect a single 480M to work but what will Dell have to do to make it work is the question. It's already getting late in the game since Clevo has released it. If it comes it should be soon.

Sorry i meant in SLI. 1 card could work but i doubt dell/alienware would offer just 1 card without the option for 2 in SLI and like it has been said that would probably require a 300w psu.
