Still waiting for mine in the mail (I suppose it takes some time for a little box to travel from Australia --> West coast Canada), but as soon as I get it, I'll post and update.
In the meantime, here is a response I got from MXM-upgrade.com when I asked whether or not Clevo-based HD5870s would work in the M17x-R1:
Hi Mike,
All I can say is that our cards seem to work just fine

If you want my interpretation of this comment, I would say that his cards are also Clevo-based and thus should workCan't blame the guy for trying to get my business, though.

Hey guys, you should try now the crossfire with the new A06 Bios, it might work.
-
Wow...never knew this was being tested. I remember when i cobbled my M17x together out of a few chassis i tried to use the dual 4870's and i had all the same issues you are describing for the 5870's
Just ended up with the dual 280's instead -
Ok so I installed the new card and it does not work with BIOS A06. Same problem as the first time I installed the card many months ago.
Messed up colors and pixelated screen:
Now, keep in mind these are both CLEVO-based cards.
What do people think I should do? Should I flash the card with the dell Bios? Or will this muck things up. I need some professional advice here. Please, no guesses. -

I would not put the dell bios on the clevo cards, that makes paper weights
I have a pair of Dell cards right now and am also not having any success getting Windows 7 to like them. At first I was trying dual 5870s but lately just tried getting one to work. No matter what driver I try in what order I am getting a 01E BSOD. Even with standard VGA drivers. Looks like we are screwed on account of a bios lock out -
This just in: I have a CLEVO-Based HD5870m for sale...
-
Any BIOS H4xx0rs around here?
-

I have a couple people working on the bios in the bios-mods forum. They will probably be able to unlock some overclocking stuff but I am not hopeful on adding GPU support

It is a problem deeper than drivers as even the Standard VGA Driver would cause that bsod.
So it is BIOS or nothing I think. -
This card is now for sale: (Good news is it will work with M17x-R2 and M15x)

Pointless for M17x systems as it doesn't have the CF connector
Good luck with your sale mate -
Okay so the person I sold this card to has a Clevo notebook, and says the card doesnt work. He is getting a "white screen" but is "pretty sure windows boots, so the card is broken"
Can anyone share any insights on this? What would a white screen be indicative of? I know the card worked when I shipped it to him... -

tell him to do a full power drain removing the CMOS battery, system battery, power cord and pressing the on/off button for ~20sec. (should be done with every hardware change) then replug everything and try again, to also check the LCD cables.
cheers -
For those of you that got the 5870 to work in the R1, can you list the steps you took to get it working?
Also, how do you have the BIOS set (am using A07).
Assuming:
Hybrid Graphics - Disabled
Integrated Graphics -Disabled
My question is if it doesn't work how do you get video back?
Won't the screen be blank/black? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Screen is not blank but buggy as all get out.
I never got it working properly (no glitches, drivers loaded, CF working) -
But does a single HD 5870 work well???
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Don't recall. I have moved one haha
Why would you want a single card? Dual 4870s is better -
But SLI/Crossfire need BIOS support to work well. -

A single 6990m would easily beat anything officially supported on the M17x R1

A report has already being sent, a link to your thread in the OP will also help for guys that are looking to put these cards in the M17x
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
True that, I spend a fair bit of time and could not make them work in my machine
-
So what was the trick? To flash them both with the master vbios? To my knowledge I always ran the same vbios on the R2. I would edit one bios and flash it to both cards.
