    Hey all,

Recently, as of last night, my M17x (R1) has been crashing. When it crashes it's an absolute power down - no blue screen, it just simply completely turns off as if there was literally no power supplied to the system. There have been no hardware or software changes (minus one windows update, but that was a day before the problem started happening), and the only difference is a change in scenery - I'm on vacation and I brought my LAPTOP with me. The network I have here is my own personal network (as I own the modem) and I doubt someone's hacking my PC through it.

Two of the three times I have experienced the problem, an immediate reboot results in another crash - the computer works fine up until the moment when it should launch windows 7, then instantly shuts down before it even says windows starting.

I've run all of the diagnostics available on my pc at the moment (windows memory, the diagnostics via F12, and the alienware diagnostics partition thing), as well as running 4 different virus scanners that I happen to have on my PC, all of which turning nothing up. I've also tried restoring my system to the moment prior to the windows update however I will still experience the crash.

I havn't been keeping tabs on the time intervals between crashing as it's only happened three times (though that's every boot I've had since the problem started), however, usually each time it's crashed it has been a fair amount of time since boot up - usually while playing a moderately demanding game. While typing this up my computer crashed, however it simply hung on the browser screen and required me to force shut down/startup the comp.

Also, a month and a bit ago I had a disk stuck in the disk drive - I ran typical troubleshooting however nothing worked, and then, magically, after about 2 days I booted the pc and it shot out the disk - though I doubt this is relevant it was a tad weird that it seemed to fix itself :S.

Thanks for any and all help,

    Sean

You using the 257.38 Dell drivers? Get rid of them, had the most Verde crashes with that driver. Update to one of the newer Nvidia drivers (been using the beta, been good so far with the Witcher 2), disable PCI Gen 2.0 in BIOS and see if you're still getting the crashes.

Also might pay to monitor your temps, just to make sure you're not getting any thermal issues causing the laptop to crash.

Thanks. I actually had dismissed gpu drivers, as the normal gpu driver crashes I've had in the past have lead to blue or green screens, not an absolute power down. (As a sidequestion; where would I download the beta drivers? :|)

Oh, and, I've been monitoring temps (thought I mentioned it), nothing above ~85 celcius so I doubt that's relevant.

    The WHQLs are here.

    The betas are here.

What's hitting 85C, is it the GPUs? 85C isn't irrelevant either. Nvidia says they're rated to well over 90C (even 100C), but hell, the thermostatic damage that occurs during temp cycling killed my 8800Ms in my M1730 multiple times and they were only ramping up to the 70s. Granted the G82/4s had crappy substrate but meh.

My 280Ms never get above 72C.

Also, are you over-clocking at all?

Thanks. Depending where I am (whether or not I have my 'stand') both the cards and the CPU get around 85 degrees, eventually, while playing games (bc2, etc). However, I'm pretty comfortable with those temps, knowing that they should be well within limits.

Both my 280Ms are around 85 after use, like I said, and I have had a tech come in, replace the GPU fans and say to me that that temp should be fine, and there didn't seem to be damage.

In regards to OC, yes, however I had the problem with my CPU on default as well. Now, obviously, if that damaged anything the damage would be permanent, however I frequently check CPU performance and if this is the moment when it does give out, I don't think it would cause crashing like this :S. I always had it at 11x, never above, fyi.

Also, I had been wondering; the reason I hadn't thought of video drivers is that I've had these same drivers for at least 3, maybe 4 months by now without any problems - could the drivers still cause problems that far along, repetitively, in such a small time frame? :S

In regards to the Verde crashes, they can be extremely weird and random. At one point I hadn't had a single crash for over a month, and then had several within a short period.

    Crashes I've had from Verde:
    - Display driver has stopped responding and recovered.
    - Hardlocked desktop/game screen (forced reboot required).
    - Black screen (forced reboot required).
    - Power down (very rare).

I good test if it's the Verde drivers (even on your current driver), is to just disable PCI Gen 2.0 in BIOS and see if the crashes still occur.

You've said it crashes even when running defaults, so probably not the OC anyways.

I don't know what your ambient temps are, so not sure what your running temps should be, but 85C still seems pretty hot to me. Thought about doing a tear-down and applying some better thermal compound?

Edit: btw, the browser hanging you mentioned in the 1st post is a symptom of the Verde crashes. Some of the advertising on this site uses Flash, and Flash video (10.x+) had/has crash issues with Verde.

I already had PCI Gen 2.0 disabled in the BIOS, however I've updated to the WHQL drivers and hopefully that helps.

Generally my ambient temps are around 20 celcius, but if I close the door to the room I generally play in and leave the comp running a but it can climb to even 22 :|.

Hopefully this works - going to play some bf tonight and tomorrow morning to check for crashing ^^.

By the way, if this works, you're my new best friend. You have no say in the matter. We'll go for bike rides and have ice cream and I'll call you George.

Edit: Still crashed. I checked temps as soon as possible (about 3 minutes after the crash), both video cards at 60, CPU at an average of 74 degrees. It was the same absolute power shut down as before - and, similar to before, when I tried to instantly reboot it would shut down again the second windows should have loaded (but only for the first attempt to reboot). No bike rides :(
