I would love some help from people who may be able to find out what changes are included in this bios revision. People getting the M17xR2 right now are reporting having this bios including myself even though the latest bios revision on Dell's website is A02.

I would expect it to be for the new video cards coming up. Not sure though.

A04? I would have imagined that A03 was the one that would have been pushed for 58xx support. They didn't happen to add the VT options in A04 ,did they?

    ROFLMAO

    Seriously?!?

    Sorry couldn't resist...

I was more productive posting this message about nothing than what they would probably provide.

I'll call tech support sooner or later. One quadrant on my keyboard isn't lighting up. When I call for that I'll ask.

I called and got transferred 3 times. The last person I talked with said he didn't know A04 existed.

We need someone like erawneila to chime in (hint hint).

    see below

The original bios for the m17x r-2 was A00. 00. This bios was riddled with flickering caused largely due to the PSU not giving the system enough power under the most demanding conditions (920XM OC'd turbo mode, crossfire, etc).

A01 was never released to the public. It was the 'testing' version of the bios that is: A02. When A01 was finalized and had undergone its last revision and testing, it was branded "A02" and released to the public.

I would be willing to guess that the bios version that Joker was given an early preview of (when they gave him is laptop back from AW HQ) might have been called "A01" (although I could be wrong, ask joker).

Either way, A01 was the bios that was merely tested and retested inbetween 00 and 02 much in the same way the 03 will likely be the bios that is tested and retested inbetween what is finally released as "A04"

and yes, you're right, they could just left A01 alone, but they wanted to give its final build distinction (humans superficially care about names). I'd also imagine it has a lot to do with increasing standards in computer and software engineering, analysis and design.

that's how I think of it, anyways.

The bios seems useless so far. I'm anticipating the next one which should add support for the 5870s.

I too have received a new M17xR2 today with BIOS A04..(Replacing a M17xR2 that has CPU detection errors with i7-920XM.. Received march 28th with Bios A02) Since March 28th to today, May 6th, there have been 2 bios revisions it seems (Unless A03 doesn't exist).. Not using new 58xx video cards (2x4870).. Maybe a fix for Command Center is in here also..
