You are always able to overclock your cpu - no matter what restrictions are placed on it.

Alright, since I have a i7 820qm, I have a locked cpu multiplier in the bios so therefore I cannot overclock it by conventional means. Surprisingly however, the options to up the DDR3 voltage and CPU Vcore voltage remain unlocked and I can mess with those all I want.

So I have a few questions. How can I go about overclocking my cpu? I have already tried setfsb to no avail. There are other software tools for overclocking a locked cpu from the OC. I was able to use setfsb to overclock a locked T7450 and a locked P8700 from the OS. It hasn't worked with my i7820qm.

Secondly whats the point of dell keeping the voltage options unlocked for me to mess with. Would there be any benefit in my upping the voltage on the RAM and CPU without upping the clock rate?

Any help if appreciated - and please don't give me the generic, "you shouldn't overclock laptops blah blah blah or you can't overclock locked cpus" because I know what I'm doing and yes you can - its just tricky.

    Thanks! :D

SetFSB does work of you do it right. You need to use the paid version of it and Abo will send you an activation code. Than you use the Asus G73 PLL.

Use the Asus G73 PLL, then hit Get FSB, use the arrows to adjust the MHz, then click Set FSB. Everything is highlighted below

Click Asus G73 PLL (Bottom of list), Click Get FSB

Move up two at a time till you crash it, and you can find the limits, run CPU benches like wprime, and superpi to test for stability. Monitor Temps, and such

Thanks, I'm going to get the paid version now and try it again. I'm assuming it doesn't matter that the Asus G73jh is using a i7 720qm and I'm using a i7 820qm. The pll's should be the same right?

PLL is on the motherboard. It's the clock generator, so it won't matter. I have used SetFSB to OC the 520M, 540M, Q720M, 920XM, and 940XM CPUs. Working to get more CPUs to bench. Once you pay for SetFSB, than if you reinistall you will need a new activation code. Once you've paid Abo, you will be a member for life. I've had him email me about 6-7 differant codes due to reinstalls.

Thanks for all of the help! I got the i7 820xm on a stable overclock of 2.120ghz! Pretty sweet! I'm going to see if I can go higher with some tweaks but at the moment, 2.12ghz is the highest it will go.
