So my M17x R2 started having issues where if I unplugged the power adaptor, it would just suddenly turn off, or I would have about 20 seconds of usage, and then it would suddenly shut off. I tried the method where you take out the battery and hold the power button for 20 seconds and put it back in. It didn't work.
Has anyone encountered this problem before?

    Additional info
The indicator light on the battery itself is showing as fully charged (5 blue dots).
When I unplug the AC adaptor, the battery icon in the system tray shows the battery as still charging.
I cannot power the laptop on with just the battery, but i can with the AC adaptor.

    processor: i7 720QM
gpu: ati radeon mobility hd 5870

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would say with 99% certainty that your battery needs to be replaced. It's common for rechargeable batteries showing full charge to die rapidly when they reach end of life. Also, for future reference, typical lifespan of a laptop battery is around 2-3 years, or about 400 charge/discharge cycles, whichever comes first.
