Hey there, I just recently upgraded my M17x-R2 to 8GB ram ( Newegg.com - Patriot Signature 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model PSD34G13332S), and since I installed it I haven't been able to shut down / reboot properly. When the laptop gets to the point of terminating power, it seemingly hangs, with the scroll lock & num lock lights on solid, and the caps lock light blinking rapidly. This happens when shutting down / rebooting from windows or from a Memtest86+ CD.

I have run through the built-in Alienware diagnostics and a full night of Memtest without a single error being found. I'm out of ideas at this point, any one out there have any other suggestions?

I have the latest (A10) bios installed, and as this happens from non-Windows environments I doubt the installed drivers matter at all (though they are all the latest, except for the AMD driver).

    Thanks!

Run one stick at a time and see if the problem persists. Have you done a complete power drain with the CMOS battery disconnected? That might clear something out that is conflicting with your new RAM. I can't think of much else.

Those are excellent suggestions! I'll give them both a try this weekend when I have a few hours.

    Thanks!

Apparently it's been a while since I've done hardware support if I forgot to try that trick... (I'm doing software QA now on tons of VMs, and IT maintains my hardware for me).

Any luck fixing the problem? I am having the same issue. A10 as well... Is it BIOS version?

I have this same problem. But my m17x-R2 came with 8gigs of ram. It was working fine a couple months ago, but now it won't shut-off or reboot properly.

I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut-off.

This makes updating drivers/reinstalling anything that requires a reboot impossible.
