I think you would have to use the specific one for the R3, you can order it from Dell or you should be able to find it on eBay.

i have never heard of someone swapping it and the m17x-r3 support is surprisingly thin

Not sure, the R3 has a weird way it connects the panel to the lid. I don't know how compatible it will be with other screens.

I had the lid of and as far as I could see the screen is screwed to the bezel.

If you do take it apart and find it can be replaced please let us know. Everything I have seen on the M17x is that the screen is bonded to the glass front making it extremely difficult to swap other than by using the complete panel/glass assembly. If it can be swapped without dealing with epoxy or glue then I'm sure many would like to know. The factory displays are expensive.

I can confirm that for the R2, would should be the same for the R3, the screen is bonded to the panel assembly with some kind of glue/epoxy.

No glue on the R3 panel, I have had mine replaced twice. It is really easy to replace.

I didn't actually replace my own screen, they sent a tech out to do it twice. I don't remember where the connector on the panel was, in fact, the wires already came attached to the panel so I don't know how removable/compatible they are. Check out the pictures in the screen disassembly guide a in one of the posts above, it doesn't look like the screen your suggesting has the mounting brackets needed to secure the screen to the motherboard. Those brackets are part of the screen itself and not the lid.

I'm just giving you my opinion, from the looks of it that screen does not look like it will work/fit. You can go ahead and buy it and test for yourself if your so sure it should work, it's up to you.

Are you saying that the lid is not glued to the panel, or the panel is not glued to the edge to edge plastic protective covering?

Do you guys think it's worth getting the full hd screen on the r3? I mean, in the previous models it made sence to take higher resolution because of the better screen quality (rgbled), but now the quality should be the same right? And...your gpu will be capable of playing the newest games at high settings for a longer time since you have lower resolution.
Or will the newest games look bad in that resolution? (I prefer full hd with no anti analysing compared to 1600*900 with aa enabled)

    Any comments?

You kinda answered your own question here. If you prefer the Full HD then get the FHD screen. I personally can no longer survive on anything under 1080p. A lower res is a disgrace on any gaming machine :D and yes, the 6990m and 580m GTX will be able to pump out sufficient frames at the highest resolution.

Well the thing is, I prefer full hd because thats the native resolution on my 23" external monitor. If i'd buy a new 17" gaming notebook I would use its own screen when i'll be staying at a dorm, so hence my question: is there a reason to go full hd, does it really look so much better than the lower resolution (especially on a smaller screen), if not: I won't be able to justifty the price & the fact that my gpu will have to work harder.

I went to the R3 with 1080p from a 1920 X 1200 Dell XPS M1710 and I'm still not used to the missing pixels! :(
