I have a question regarding an upgrade that Dell is offering me, currently I own a M17X-R1, I have dual gtx 260m's and are overheating. They offered to swap me for the dual ATI 4870m's plus some money on top.
My question is would it be worth paying the difference for this upgrade? they want $150 more.......

    Thanks! :D

Your cards are most likely overheating due to clogged heatsinks and/or they need a repaste job.
Are you under warranty? I'd say no way for money on top, they are better than the 260Ms but still..

If it is under warranty, you shouldn't have to pay for anything. If they are trying to give you some more 260's, state your case and see what they can do for you. And look HERE for more warranty info. I wouldn't want a same part replacement if the first is giving me fits. But you may have to jump through their hoops to get what is right in the end.

Yes it is still under warranty, he offered to replace it with 260's or do the upgrade.... well I kinda offered to pay some money so I guess I should'n have... they are supposed to call me this afternoon.
I just wanted to know if its a big improvement coming up from my 260's. Those 260m cards perform very well in my humble opinion :D

See my post above, I think it answers your question.
Again, yes they are more powerful and if your current GPUs are overheating it's up to Dell to fix it under warranty, your wish to upgrade is another thing.

If you're happy with the 260Ms performance and they won't change them for what you want, unless you pay, then it's a no brainer.
See what they can do about it first and they might offer you the upgrade free of charge.

Just for my own curiosity: did you(or somebody else) ever opened the system to clean it or change the thermal paste?

They're a decent upgrade, they run very cool, even after being overvolted and overclocked to the limits of stability. I hit a 14000 GPU score in vantage without even getting into the mid 70's.

Most likely the reason for the 4870's is due to a stock issue. 260Ms are gone, 280's are probably hidden away in a locked vault. My 2 cents, I wouldn't pay anything if I had warranty remaining and my GPUs were dead or failing.

Even if you offered to pay, just say that you have researched it (you have, you are posting here) and that you are sticking with NVIDIA and you do not feel its appropriate or fair that you should have to 'pay' for warranty service.

Let the rep figure it out. Who knows where you'll end up at. ;)

I did open my computer and I cleaned the insides as best as I could. I have never changed the thermal paste since I do not know how.....
But thanks a lot for your input that answers my question ;)
