sorry for the crappy pics but I only have my phone cam. but let get to it.

step 1- remove battery and back panel. once back panel is off unscrew the media bar cover- labeled with the green circles, on your laptop those are labeled with an "I" inside a circle.
    1.JPG

step 2- now flip the bad boy over and tilt the screen as far back as possible. used a plastic prying tool or finger nails if you don't have one, pry from the back end, once one corner is prop open just gently wiggle it up untill the whole media cover is seperated. then disconnect the media cable labeled in hot pink, and remove the keyboard screw labeled in green, 5 in total.

    2.JPG
    3.JPG
step 3- flip the keyboard over, use a cloth or something to cover the palm rest incase of getting scratches. now disconnect all the lcd/wifi cables, labeled in pink. once everything is disconnected and out of the way tilt the screen up to 90 degree, so it straight up. then remove all the screws labeled in green, 3 from each side, 6 total. once unscrewed just left up and the whole lcd assembly should just seperate from the main laptop body.
    4.JPG
    5.JPG
step 4- remove the 2 screws labeled in green. then with a little downward pressure push the screen toward your self, then screen should slide away from the lid. you only need to slide it down like a 1/2" then just left up. thats it your done, there are no cables connected to the lid to worry about. reverse everything to put back.

Very nice guide, been wondering how the lid on the alienware m17x r3 came off as there were no guides previous to this. :D Good job, and thanks very helpful. I just have a question once the lid is off is it easy to put back on cause I am thinking about changing mine out to a red one? Do you just line it up and slide it back up and it locks in? Thanks in advance!!! Repped :)

Since this is a thread on the screen disassembly does anyone know how to replace the lcd screen? I have noticed that I have a few stuck pixels and I tried to run programs to get rid of them but no luck. Is the plexiglass on it hard to remove? Has anyone had their screen replaced on the m17x r3? I wonder if dell sends new replacement screens with the plexiglass already attached or just the lcd screen itself, or if that is something that a dell tech has to install? Does anyone know? Thanks :)

its prolly best to call dell for a replacement screen, since dead pixels are impossible to fix. the lcd is one piece taking it apart would be very hard, and putting it back together would be even harder.

inap, i saw somewhere else that you have replaced your screen a few times because of dust problems? I just got a M17xR3 and there is a small piece of dust in the lower left hand side. Will they replace it by sending a screen out and having a local technician exchange it or send it to you to do it yourself? I'm fine with doing it myself or having someone else do it, just want to know if they will try to charge you for anything.

This is perfect. I was actually going to start looking around to replace my screen because it's turning on/off when I move it forward. I think it might be a cable issue, but the cables are part of the entire lid, right? Can you buy entire lids anywhere on the internet, or even directly from Dell?

The panel is not glued to the lid but I am pretty sure you will not be able to separate it from the glass very easily. It must be bonded somehow, when I got my two screen replacements they came with the panel already bonded to the glass.

Hi guys, I have a question regarding of the LCD type. Currently I am using 1600x900 resolution LCD in my m17x R3 which is when I check in my original system configuration from dell the part number of my LCD is 9CWCT.

I am planning to change my 900 LCD into 1080P which is Full HD. Do you guys have any recommendation which one is the most compatible 1080P LCD parts number for my Laptop (M17x R3)?

    Thank you very much.

Nice guide man. Is there any possibility you can post a picture of the screen assembly's backside after emoving the back lid. Also would you know if it was at all possible to have the webcam removed?

I need to have it removed because were I work a webcam could get me arrested.

I have the separate light Alienhead as in it stays on when my screen is asleep. I've opened mine and yes it is as pictured.

Do you mean it stays on when you close your lid and set the computer to "do nothing" when lid closes?

I mean when my laptop screen turns off after a long period, the Alienhead is still glowing. If i set to do nothing and shut the lid, the screen turns off and my Alienhead is still on.

    i found a better picture.

you can just take out the cam and leave the leads if you want. or you can follow that wire to under the keyboard and take it out too.

    Hi There,

Is there anyway to seperate the glass/plastic front cover from the screen panel so to help with the glare?

I have managed to change the screen to a 1920x1200, but it was not easy. You have to cut through all that glue to get everything separated. It takes a lot of patience and about 3 hours and you're there.

Is it clean when you finish? I mean, was it hard to remove the glue before putting in the new screen?
