I've owned my m17x-r4 a year and half now...and during that time, the only issue I had was a hard drive failure which was replaced. However a few days ago, I woke my laptop up after a day's sleep only to find it lagging! Opening folders, the cursor, videos and games...everything lags! If I connect it to a power source then most of the lag will disappear except for the games. Sometimes if i switch off wi-fi, the general lag will disappear when running on battery...sometimes.

To play games, I need to re-install the Nvidia drivers every time I power-up my laptop and I'm starting to get really frustrated! I tried one suggestion where I was asked to change my preferred gpu in the nvidia control panel to my gtx675-m but that option isn't even there. Device manager doesn't show any problems with the gpu.

    Please help!
And if this topic has already been addressed in another thread, I'm really sorry- please point me to it so I can delete this one.

    I use a 3d m17x-r4 with a gtx 675m.

I presume you have done a full check for Viruses/Malware/Spyware/Ransomware? That would be my first avenue of attack. I usually use Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware and scan those on full to see if anything comes up. The lag that your describing almost sounds like another HDD problem if your experiencing it when you are trying to open folders or videos, I would suggest running diagnostics on the machine ( F12 at post ) and see if it can come up with anything. Why you would have to re-install your GPU drivers every time you play a game though is beyond me unless you are experiencing a HDD failure or a GPU issue but I don't know what GPU issue would cause that, with any luck the diagnostics may help in that regard as well.

Have you tried a clean install? just to eliminate any OS problems.

Sounds like everything is throttling. It would also be nice to see if you have settings in power management that stop your R4 to work at full performance. For instance you could have cooling switched to passive etc. Its worth a try as well.

Diagnostics doesn't show anything wrong with any part of the laptop. And by a clean install, do you mean of the OS? I was thinking of re-installing windows too...but obviously if there's some easier/less tedious solution, I'd really appreciate it!

So, Avast! couldn't find any problems...there was also a problem where it wasn't able to scan certain files/folders but malwarebytes found quite a lot of suspicious files (over a hundred!) . Anyway I removed all of them and surprise surprise, when I restarted the laptop without plugging it in-it doesn't lag in any window...In fact I'm typing right now without being plugged in and before this I watched a hd video on vlc! So I'm going to keep watch on this and monitor the situation to see if this is some temporary anomaly or something permanent! I haven't checked out any games yet- will try that soon. I think I'll buy Malware Bytes if my laptop's okay- I owe them that much at least! :D

Using AlienRespawn could help as well.

Glad to hear everything appears to be working again :) Virus's and Malware can really drag your system down. If everything is working good that's great but be careful as sometimes they can bury themselves deep inside your system and keep bringing themselves back from the grave as it were. If it does come back again , I would suggest a clean install of Windows as that should clear it all out.....it is most definitely pain sometimes but it is really the best way to clear it all out.

It's been a few days since then and everything is working fine, thank you very much! I'm using a combination of Malware bytes, Avast and SuperAntiSpyware because the latter detected a few more suspicious files after Malware Bytes went on its rampage! :D
