I just helped a friend build a new Desktop pc with an HD7970 in it and I was like Oh damn I want this too but I have no money.

So the idea came up wouldn't it be possible to have the M17xR* connect to an External desktop graphics card using the MXM slot? You could just put a splitter on the mxmslot, make the other one an External MXM to PCi-Ex16 slot and have the Dgpu shutdown when the Egpu is connected. That way you could connect a desktop graphics card (with a small PSU and a nice casing) to your notebook and have the card video card connect to the HDMI-IN . This would be way better then the current Thunderbolt/expresscard solutions with questionable Price/performance.

So why not make an external E-MXM connection? First one to make this work will be rich for sure.

thunderbolt solutions are not popular because there is no simple plug in/install driver and play + thunderbolt solution makes the cards way way slower. (if you read my post you wouldve known :p)

    Interesting link there

edit: Thunderbolt seems to give 85-100% performance. Think I'm going to post in the Egpu forum for an Alienware solution. Since we dont have Thunderbolt

Why get a EGPU for alienware when you can stick a 680MX in there?

because 1: the price 2: future updates 3: I have AMD switching to nvidia harder? 4: desktop graphics cards always better in same price range

but your suggestion is very interesting. Haven't been keeping up lately. So when would the 680MX be available?
