FYI - Following update released today for 17xR1 ( remember, this is only for the R1 and the NVIDIA MCP79 Chipset)...
NV MCP79 Chipset
Release Date: 6/28/2010
Version: 15.57
Fixes and Enhancements
Enhanced sata performance
Download/Release info HERE
Note: This installer will prompt you to install the 'NVIDIA ForceWare Network Access Manager' - this is NV's firewall. Researching this via google shows this can lead to network problems if used. Before installing this component you may want to research it a bit more. I opted not to install this component.

Did this real fast before I leave for work.

Do not want. -
The 2nd run looks a lot better actually

Worth a try I suppose, not that I have any SATA performance problems at the moment

DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Huh, I would think AW should probably focus on other bigger problems that exist with that chipset before something like SATA performance. Just my two cents. I would try this but the new R2 should be here today and the R1's are going back! ;-)
-
Your right DaneGRClose. We need BIOS A05 with the clock modulation fixed at least, Thats my only problem with this laptop.
-
well it made things worse for me

it has dropped my SSD drive speed by 1/3 to 1/4 but made no difference to my second 500 Gb 7200 RPM Seagate Drive
So for a SSD drive this driver is a Epic Fail -
Nothing! works right! Appears a new update, I always wonder what was to improve the performance but when something comes along that I do not want.
Alienware has me very discouraged ! -

i guess this a "no go" driver then.
-
not if your looking at using a SSD drive anyways
-
I am getting a SSD soon. How do I remove this driver and go back to the old one?
-
Goto Control Panel > Device Manager > Select IDE Device > Properties > Driver > then select roll back driver (to the Windows one)
-
Thanks Dave! +1

Just sharing my experiences.
This driver "update" brought back my audio anomalies (popping, hissing etc.).
After uninstalling (system restore) everything is back to normal.
D. -
Interesting debaucher - I did not notice any audio (DPC) issues.
Is anyone actually using the updated chipset drivers? I noticed a couple of HDD lockups after updating which resulted in the system reporting bad sectors of the HDD and correcting them.
After moving back to the previous version I am no longer seeing these lockups/errors. Trying to rule out a failing HDD - anyone else seeing problems with this release??
Thanks. -
Im using the new chipset driver, Have been since its release day. No problems at all regarding lockups but I have noticed something weird.
When I'm running on battery my HDD will spin down after 10 seconds even if i set it to never in the power profile. I can hear it spin back up every few minutes when its needed. Doesn't happen on adapter -
Yeah - that is something I noticed as well. Keep an eye out for any odd HDD errors or crashes.
-
I have no DPC problems with this driver, no issues so far.
The only thing I noticed is if I remove this driver, Windows recognises my HDD as external hard drive and displays an icon in taskbar to eject it (like USB stick). After installing the chipset driver, the icon disappears.
Is it normal?
-
Odd Arsenal... As long as reinstalling the previous chipset driver or this one fixes the HDD as an External, I wouldn't worry about it.
-
-
me, as well
-
I am getting weird random LAGs that can take upto 3 min to go away. How do I reinstall the old driver? Anyone have a download link?
-
The fact that the drivers from nvidia remove that feauture would make me worry about the performance because it seems that they don't allow the full utilization of the AHCI.
Just run more benchmarks and compare the results to find out which driver gives you the best performance.
