This may be useful guys. Nix the CCC and see what happens with your R2.

Hi, I just updated my driver for the ATI graphics card to 11.6 and my FN keys to adjust brightness have stopped working, if i install the bios posted here will they work again? If not, what should i do?

It might... that would depend on the reason the brightness control keys are not functioning. You can give it a shot. Some had great results with it and some not so great. I had a good result with the BIOS posted on this thread, but I had to tinker with some other drivers.

It's very possible that your FN keys are malfunctioning due to OSD. I recommend you uninstall and reinstall OSD. Don't use the version on the Alienware Resource Disc or you may have big problems. Instead, download a new OSD from the support web site and use that version for the OSD installation.

Thanks, just got them to work again and was a little messy at beginning, Im not sure if this will work for veryone with the same problem like me but they can try...

I unisntalled all ATI drives and searched on internet for the old one i had. New one is 11.6 and I downgraded it to 11.3 (the one that came from factory)
Then i just used custom install for 11.6 and selected the CCC (Catalyst Control Center) as the only option to install.

I know its not updating the driver but at least i have an updated Control Center :)

That's great news if it works for all R2 owners. Sadly, I no longer own my R2 so I cannot test out with these new drivers. I hope more people with R2's can try this and report back as to wether or not it is a comprehensive fix to the issue. If it is, great...if not....back to Dell's Engineering Team......

Shame.....thought he had an R2.... :( probably not much chance for new 5870 drivers for those with top end R2 setups....

Did anyone try disabling OSD from starting with Windows (uncheck it in MSCONFIG and reboot) to see if doing so makes this problem go away? This stops Aero from flaking out on the M18x and I'm just curious if an OSD bug was the culprit on the R2 all along instead of a BIOS issue.
New drivers for which device? Display, or something else?

So is there a proper fix for this yet guys ? Because I had the problems you guys mention here after installing the CFX HD5870M into to R1 . Either it freezes or shows a BSOD , every time I put the computer to sleep .
I am using the CCC 11.8 and the cards flashed with Dell Vbios

Any updates on this folks? This thread has not received any activity since 9/14. Current state of resuming from S3 to a blank screen and/or brightness FN key's failing with a potential for BSOD?

I wish I could update o nthis but I no longer have an R2.....I havent seen a fix released for it so I imagine its still there....maybe its something that can be forwarded to Dell_Bill_M so he could investigate? (I know he has alot on his plate at the moment with the 580m throttle issue....)

Yeah, I was mainly looking for any workaround updates which current R2 owners use... Oh well, going to give this a few more days. Thx.

I'm still having the same problem. I'm using the latest A10 bios and VBIOs. Did a fresh install twice and whenever I put the system to sleep or even hibernate, the system will not wake up. I would have to take out the battery and hold down the power button to get the computer to start up again.

Sorry to hear that. To my knowledge, Alienware has not fixed it. Are you still under warranty? If so, have you called Tech Support to see what they can do for you?
