I received an M17xR2 about a week ago and I noticed a strange noise coming from it last night.

It seems to whine when on (maybe CPU whine?) but when the unit is turned off and plugged into the mains, the LHS of the unit is "whining" constantly. I have to remove the power supply to stop it.

Is this a common issue with these units, or does it appear I have a faulty one.

It's fairly audible as the unit is stirring next to my Antec 1200 and I can hear it clearly.

Listening to the power supply these is a very slight hum (which i believe is normal) yet the laptop is constantly whining when plugged in and off (I am impressed how much smaller the power supply is compared to the M1730 unit)

    Any suggestions?

I have heard that whining as well
I assume its my hard drive(Dell sent it with a 250gb 7200RPM drive its a WD Black was supposed to be 256GB SSD) as i have not gotten my SSD yet and it comes from that area around the RTFG keys on the keyboard where the HDD is(IDK if that is the same for you), but IDK about when it's off haven't had that happen. I'll let you know tomorrow when my SSD gets here if the whining stops

Thanks for the response. To clarify the noise (when off) is coming out of the left hand side of the unit - literally it sounds like it's coming from just behind the ports on this side, before the keys start.

Yah, I have heard that when its on and I'm pretty sure it is the Hard drive still cuz there is nothing else that is moving there and whining is usually a mechanical noise unless the GPU/motherboard whines that IDK of. I will let you know for sure tomorrow if the whining I hear stops tomorrow when I get the SSD.

    Hello fellow Alien,

What you are hearing, imho, is a faulty transistor or something like that (I am no engineer).

I do however hear it myself, see my posts:

    and:

Basically, I had AW changed my mobo, and my two ATI's. Now, I can barely hear it, so it's much better. You might wanna give it a try on your side.

    Cheers !

I have the same whine. It is something to do with the GPU and is suppose to be completely ok. Its the GPU whine and I heard almost all mobile gpus do it.
