What is your maximum multiplier OC and TDP/TDC with default voltage and stable wPrime for 940XM?

Im getting the assumption that current 940XM yield is quite poor and they barely pass the minimum set speed.

i have 2 940XM now, one of which OC like mad, goes 28X multiplier, TDP/TDC 90/62 and can run wPrime 8 threads without issues for hours. however, the cpu seems to be defective, because it can cause M17x to randomly loose power/shut down even at stock speed. doesnt matter when it's gaming, browsing internet, or watching movie. it can happen half hour after boot or even sometimes 12hours without power off. i confirmed this when i received my replacement M17xR2 and swapped the cpu over, it happened on the new system as well.

the second 940XM i got, rock stable at stock BUT does not OC well at all. or should i say, dont OC at all. setting 5% OC in alienware BIOS would cause bluescreen. at no BIOS OC, setting multiplier 26X barely pass wPrime stability test and 27X definately causes bluescreen. TDP/TDC im using now is 82/62. it can go higher though, but i dont see the point because anything higher wont make much of a difference when the core is already reaching it's thermal limit. im reluctant to increase voltage by 75mV because of thermal reasons, but at 75mV, it can almost pass 27X multiplier.

note that all OC and TDP/TDC manipulation are done with unclewebb's excellent throttlestop tool. so what are the chances both 940XM $1000 cpu are of subpar quality? if you guys could post your max multiplier and tdp/tdc stable speed and gives as much info as possible with your 940XM, that would help new owners to decide whether it's worth to invest that much in this cpu. 920XM users are welcome to post your results as well.

For optimal price : performance, the 920xm is the one to get. The 940xm is only good for running at slightly higher speeds at default. But anyone using TS can easily change a 920xm into a 940xm.

I run mine at 75 TDP/62 TDC on a daily basis and 110 TDP/85 TDC when benchmarking. My CPU runs very cool (idle 43-48C depending on ambient) and a max load temp of 78C. But that's because I did a CPU retention mod on my heatsink and used MX-3. People using stock paste + no mods are going to run with a lot higher temps.

I wouldn't recommend raising the TDP on the 920xm or 940xm for the average user. Dell set them at 62 TDP which is high enough to achieve 19-20x on the multipliers with 8 threads. The returns for higher TDP are not worth it because thermals skyrocket after 62 TDP unless you have a modded HSF like I do + aftermarket paste.

Again, I don't recommend changing the TDP unless you are 100% confident you know what you are doing and can combat the higher temperatures.

im running 25X multiplier with 82/62 TDC/TDC on a dailiy basis. did MX-3 repaste and a little retention mod (not really extreme, just bend the heatsink a little). i get like 96C max temperature with 8 threads wPrime. idle at 48-50C. during gaming sessions, max cpu temperature is about 82-86C, which is acceptable for me. raising the back of the laptop might get another 2-3C down, so right now im looking for ways to raise the back and still provide 100% air intake.

what do you think of my 940XM cpu Joker? im sure you've done extensive testings with 940XM. based on what i described in the first post, do you think my cpu is normal or performing subpar in terms of overclockablitliy?

Your second CPU seems fine. Mine doesn't go over 26x on stock voltage either. First one I'm not sure, could be a voltage issue with that one too.

mmm... then 26X must be the limit of 940XM. just that my first cpu can reach 28X stable at stock voltage is really amazing. but sadly, even at everything stock, the cpu keeps causing random shut down.

Joker, when you say you bend the heatsink, can you elaborate a little bit? Think this would help drop temps at the 110+ TDP range? I'm looking to boost some benchmarks ;)

what's your max stable multiplier and TDP/TDC settings for your 940XM if you dont mind me asking.

Hmm, good question, I've never really gone for anything stable. Unless I'm benching, I run everything stock, so I don't really have an answer.

I bent mine by flexing the opposing diagonal corners of the sink (the part that makes contact with the CPU). I did that because mine wasn't making good contact in the center to begin with. If yours is perfectly level, it's not necessary. All you'd need to do is the c-clip retention mod on it and then do it the way I described.

My 920xm can hit 27x on stock volts and 29x with volts 1 notch up, but I have never gotten it higher than that due to heat throttling at that point (100c+)

I tried to do jokers mod but the c-clips on my CPU retention clip are different to the GPU - It doesnt look like I can take them off without damaging them.

You can use either of these two tools:
