And this is what gets me-my 3DMark 06 was 183xx, and my Vantage was 103xx. What's the deal there? I might restart, check all my processes and make sure I didn't have something(virus scan) running I didn't know about. But I have done it 2 times with close to the same results.

He doesn't have your processor xD And you have 4870's anyway, you should compare it to someone with the same on here, might check the benchmark thread or try a google search with the cpu and gpu specs, maybe m17x aswell.

Same score as me more or less. I think i posted my results a few pages back, or only 1. And for Vantage i have somewhat the same ~10.5k CPU ~14050 +/-100 GPU and overall score somewhere at 13k yeah, i normally only look/test the GPU Benchmarks in Vantage.

I agree our systems are different. What I am trying to point out is that his CPU is a 720, mine is 920XM and his Vantage is 3000+ better than mine. Who knows. I'll run it later.

Over all though, no problems yet since I flashed.

Yeah that Vantage score is definetly not right like that, you should get atleast 12k GPU and 16k CPU score in my oppinion...

I just ran 3DMark06 with the new A09 BIOS and the new vBIOS and I scored a 18951
No overclocks whatsoever! Is that normal? I just got my laptop 4 days ago and I have no idea what to expect

Yeah that's pretty good, absolutely normal i would even say :D

Check this benchmark from DR650SE on his 920xm, damn close:

But you know... You have an overclocking option in your bios, did you know?

F2 during boot to enter BIOS. Find that OC setting, I forget where it is exactly. Change it from 0% to anything else (up to 5% is allowed). Exit and save changes. Reboot. That's it.

It's that easy?? I saw that good stuff in the BIOS. It's in the Performance options. If I put it at 5%. How much more performance am I getting? And is that overclock feature new? Do I need to up any voltages?
I scored a 18951 in 3DMark06. Will putting it at 5% get me in the 20,000 range?

To get up to the 20,000 range you will need to download ThrottleStop, right click on it and start increasing the turbo TDP/TDC settings. These settings change how much turbo boost your CPU can deliver when it is fully loaded. You can also adjust the turbo multipliers using ThrottleStop. When you combine these two methods, you will see a significant increase in performance but you will need to keep a close eye on your core temperature. Running more watts through your CPU can increase the temperature significantly.

Oh perfect! Does the BIOS overclock feature 0-5% do anything?
Is it even worth trying. I just want a stable safe overclock. I'm not looking to break records or fry my CPU. I just want a lil sumtin if you know what I mean.
Can u post a couple pics of what I need to set everything at?

    0% 18956 in 3DMark06
    3% 19563 in 3DMsrk06

    I haven't done 5% yet.
Is 5% going to be stable 24/7
If so I'm just going to do 5% all the time

How do you guys look at your GPU temps?
HWmonitor doesn't show them. Either does Furmark
Is there some kind of Plugin or sensor I need to enable?

i suggest you turn to the right forum for your questions.
unclewebb already linked to the OC thread : http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...icial-m17x-benchmark-thread-part-3-a-521.html

Install HWiNFO32 for your GPU temps. It also has a windows gadget that you can enable.

Tell you what I have seen twice today. I leave the laptop onat work. No sleep or hibernation. I have left it idle for an hour or 2 twice and when I come back, I have control of the mouse, but clicking on items does nothing. Windows key does nothing. Now the screen is black as I have none set for screensaver. But the LED comes on like it is ready to go. Then, the CPU fan takes off and gets faster and faster. All of a sudden, it all starts working again. And all the stuff I have clicked while it was not responding, comes up. Any ideas or anyone else have this issue???

Uhm do you press any button to make that happen, that "comming back"?

because THAT sounds like your laptop is either sleeping or hibernating or saving energy... If you have something that serious to reproduce your very complex issue that you have. A video recorded via camera would be cool :D

No offense Grif, but I KNOW what sleep is! This happens is when the laptop is on, has been idle for 10 minutes and the display (ONLY) turns off. The OS is still running. I move the mouse and it functions fine, but if I click anything, nothing works. I mouse over my Rocketdock-nothing. Windows key-Nothing. Ctrl-Alt-Delete...Nada. Then, 2-2.5 minutes, it came back. Bout to try it again. Going to get a bite and see if it does it while I'm gone. Will post>...............

No. And I just got back. Yummy mexican! The food was good too.

On topic-no problem when I got back. But, I just installed VmWare and it didn't go black bc I started the installation before leaving and it was waiting on the serial when I got back. Sooooo, the screen never went black, just dimmed. I'll leave it on tonight and check in the AM. Not gonna have time tonight bc I am about to get my play on.

Check your system event viewer logs for errors pertaining to disks. Your symptoms fit the bill for disk channel timeouts. In my experience, disk issues manifest in systems that appear frozen, except you can still move the mouse, and after extended periods of time, they "unfreeze" and all the while were keeping track of what you clicked, and starts replaying those actions.

    Just a thought...

It can be due to failing drives, or driver issues, or even HDD firmware problems. I recently, as a matter of fact, had this same type of issues with a few Dell Studio 14z notebooks. Turned out that all of them had WD 250GB HDD's in them. Cloned the drives over to a Toshiba 250GB HDD, and the problem disappeared. Bad drives? No. Some issue with the nVidia nForce SATA driver and the WD firmware in the drives causing SATA channel timeouts.

Just sounded like the same symptoms I was having so I thought I would bring it up...

Either one :) bios updates are for the mobo not HDD

go ahead and backup and flash
you have a RAID 0 setup you might have to change it back as sometimes it will switch it AHCI

just press f2 when you see the alienhead

So, could this be tied to the BIOS update? I left it on all night and didn't see it this morning. But now, Every time I restart, I get a black screen with the mouse curser. I hear all the Windows sounds that happen on startup. I have full control of the mouse but all black. I press enter and the cursor disappears. Enter the second time and the OS comes up. Then all is fine. But no matter how long I leave it, the screen remains black. Don't think it is the BIOS, but it's been diong it since the update/flash.

But, it is a new computer and I am installing all my stuff back on it sooooo....

Doing a virus and malware check now, but any ideas or solutions are welcome. Again, don't think it's the BIOS, but just seeing if anyone else is having the issues-which I have seen nothing negative yet. Go figure!!!!

I would do a complete reinstall of your video drivers. Uninstall, delete, ccleaner, driver sweeper and then a new install of them. I don't think it's related to the BIOS update at all.

Given your more detailed description, it doesn't sound like a disk problem. BUT, have you looked in the system and application event viewer to see if there are any errors that might be related?

looks like something is corrupted on win7.

also did you try start task manager (when in desktop) then end explorer.exe process, and then file->type new task->explorer.exe ? I really do this everytime my screen is turned off and then just move the mouse to bring the light back because the taskbar just doesnt show up without doing this even though the rest desktop does. I had this even with my 4870s.

I still woul check eventviewer first.
    Start->run->eventvwr
go to system events and filter to see only error messages
if you want you can export that list and post it here for us to check.

I will do just that. Looking it over now. I have a lot of errors. Some are 'normal' I assume. I just got the last 3 days. Post shortly.

EDIT: too big to post here.

You can export it to a file and then post the file here.
