While trying to flash the bios on my M17xR2 to A10, I bricked the computer. I've tried all other solutions, to no availability. I found a pre-programmed bios chip on ebay, but I don't know exactly where the bios chip is located in the computer. Before I take my computer apart, all I have to go on is this picture: http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/4/9/1/9/1/3/webimg/522620711_o.jpg

Any help to where this chip is located in the computer, hopefully without taking too much of the computer apart, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Anybody? I can't find the info anywhere. Just trying to save time on unnecessary disassembly of the laptop. The seller of the bios chip on ebay has no idea.

So I'm assuming I have to take apart the whole laptop just to get to the bios chip?

Your question is very specific and technical, it usually takes more time before someone comes along with the info. Dell makes the manuals available online, so there might be something there. In any case, you'll most likely have to solder the new chip on, so it'll take a motherboard removal which means a near full teardown anyways.

That should indeed be the bios chip, as i can see right next to it is the AlienFX chip.
This chip that you have marked in the photo is between the Wifi card and Bluetooth card expansion slots (on the top side). You will have to remove keyboard, media board, palmrest and magnesium tray between the motherboard and keyboard. Then it wil be easily accessibile to you. You don't need to take out the motherboard or do a full disassembly of the laptop.

Just be very patient and carefull when removing the old chip, things can go wrong very fast.

This thread should become a sticky for m17xr2 owners that need to change their bios chips, and want instruction how to do it properly. I'm sure I'm not the only one doing this, because the person on ebay sells a ton of these bios chips for the m17xr2 ..xD. If anyone has done this before, please post here. Now I am looking at the original bios chip on the board, and I'm not sure how to desolder, then install correctly, without the pins touching. Maxslo- I think you have to take the whole motherboard out, because the pins on the chip pass through the pcb and are soldered on the back of the mobo.

    Hi,
There is good enough space to desolder the old chip.
The easiest process will be the soldering of the new.
The hardest removing the old chip.

Watch this guide if you do not have the required tools.
    Good luck.

The bios chip is Soic-8 and the pins are not going thru the mobo, but are only soldered on the top.

If you don't feely capable of doing this you should be able to get a technician to replace it for you, i hardly doubt it would cost more than 10$ :p (it's roughly 2-3 mins of work)...
