Purchased this laptop 3 month ago through ebay, mostly because of the setup and the cross fire boards, the unit arrived but did not work properly, about 10 minutes after startup it just shuts down by himself, sometimes the ominous BLUE screen appears and somewhere in the text it asks for video drivers! I reinstalled the drivers but no avail. Then sometimes it works all day up to a whole week, like today I was watching several DVDs on this absolutely amazing screen with no problems at all, when this laptop works it is faaassst, incredible fast video processing, I use the alienwares for running Solidworks 3D machine design software with all his option I am not a gamer at all, I am telling you this laptop works fantastic when it works!. I changed the hard drives out thinking it maybe that but it makes no difference, it still shuts down whenever it wants, it seems though when it is in a processing sequence like running my solidworks or watching DVDs it does not shut down, so I am at a loss what it could be. It may be just a driver mismatch, a loose board or cable, something must have happened during shipping (if the seller did not lie, what am I thinking, he did lie!), if it was a major problem like the motherboard it would not work at all. I am not a computer wizard more a user, so to shorten this story I filed a c-l-a-i-m with the folks a p------l and it was denied that was a kick in the rear, since I paid $1,300.00 for it, so I got royally screwed, so much for buyer p r o t e c t i o n.
I was debating for a week if I should take it apart and sell all the individual parts or get it repaired I decided to offer it for auction with a modest reserve, about the same amount I would get when I part it out. Since I depend on a powerful laptop for work I purchased already a new R3 from Dell to get on with my life, so now I like to recover as much as I can to get my sanity back, so my loss, hopefully your gain.
The one thing the seller did not lie about was the condition, when it arrived you truly cannot tell that this one is used or not! Now me, the dummy when changing the hard drives I somehow slightly scratched the glass surface of the screen, on the upper right side, (cant be see when in use) still dont know how that happened, that would be the ONLY blemish on this laptop, no wear on the keys or mouse pad, the LED lights for all the alienware buttons work fine, as I said everything works great as long as this unit is on, so go figure.
Comes with original 240W power supply, second genuine Dell battery, original manual, alien hat, resource CDs with Dell Windows 7 & and drivers, original box with original packaging, will be shipped in this box, I will however remove the hard drive DD0, since I never had the chance to wipe it, when the unit worked for more than a week I had my hopes up and thought the problem just magically goes away. Hard drives are readily available on ebay and other sites. So somebody may know much more about the guts than I do, he or she may be able to fix it and get a great laptop for a reasonable price.
