I bought my r2 over ebay and laptop had the same exact issue. Was to much of a pain to get it working i think it took me maybe a month. After constant hard formats and vbios flashes somehow it got working.

SO is this laptop worth buying?

Not knowing the price that you are bidding (or hope to get it for), it depends. Unfortnately there are a lot of different things that could be causing the problem, so if you get it "cheap" enough it might be worth getting.
Things that come to mind that could cause a problem such as this:
Motherboard
Processor
Video Card (1 or both)
Memory
He already said he replaced the HDD so that's not the problem.
So depends on how much money you are willing to throw at it in an effort to test the possible components to determine the likely source.
Could simply be a component over-heating (easily fixed with a repaste), or could be something far more complicated (like a failing CPU/GPU or something shorting on the motherboard)
Afraid there isn't enough information to know for certain, it'll be a crap shoot on parts, and depends on how comfortable you are buying parts and taking the system apart to trouble shoot.
If I were you I'd price CPU's, Motherboards, and GPU's on ebay or check the forum posts here and see what the cost would be to replace ALL of those (just in case). If you can replace the parts AND still get a deal on the laptop, then it might worth it. If you are getting it for a great price and are willing to do some trouble shooting/swapping and trial and error then it might be worth it to you.
Might be lucky and be something minor or simple...but I always try to plan for ALL aspects, because it may come down to replacing more parts then you expect.
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck either way! -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Can you get the Service Tag and see if maybe if there is a remote chance it is in warranty?

I won't do it if i was you.. you will be youre username worth then
..
But seriously no if you can get it for verry cheap and you have spare money for it go for it.. -
I wouldn't buy a system hoping it works. I'd need confirmation what the issue is before spending hundreds of $$ on it.
