For the last 1-2 days, I have been having problems with random restarts. I would not be doing anything heavy on the laptop and boom restart. I had installed SP1 but restored to an earlier point. Still no avail.

I can use the PC for intensive tasks and games and it runs just fine. It restarts without any trigger. I even looked up the event viewer to make sure no even triggers this restart. It doesn't even give a BSOD so that I can diagnose the problem. Please help!

Did this problem ever get resolved? I've already gone through 2 troubleshooting sessions with Alienware tech and they replaced the motherboard and battery on my system, but the problem is still there. They had me ship out my laptop to them and currently it's in their possession.

This issue has given me a real headache, I've reinstalled everything and made sure to use the latest drivers, and the problems are still there. I've lost lots of important work because the laptop just shuts down out of nowhere. It can happen during a game or simply editing a document. Apart from that issue, my usb ports become unresponsive, and shutting down the laptop when that happens causes the system to do a bluescreen. Also the battery doesn't charge, I have to power cycle the machine every time I decide to use the battery. That's ridiculous.

In any case, it's the waiting game. If the laptop comes back with the same issues then I'm going to push back and have to ask for a refund or a replacement system.

My M17x is the same as your signature, except I have the i7 840qm processor.

    Hey man,

still no resolution. I haven't contacted Alienware tech regarding this issue because I am trying to fix it myself.

I am guessing it has something to do with power supply. I looked at the event viewer and it says sudden loss of power. It never happens whenever I am doing intensive gaming or anything of the sort. It happens when I am doing light work or just surfing.

As for your case, you need to ask for a replacement, it is pretty obvious that they themselves cant resolve it.

Are you using throttlestop by any chance? If your TDP/TDC are too high it may cause random restarts with no warnings.

Used to but no longer. There is no overclocking as of right now.

    Do this:

winkey+pause (it will open system properties)
    Go under "advanced system settings"
Hit settings under "startup & recovery" tab

On the window that will open uncheck automatically restart under "system failure".

    Reboot.

After that if the error occur, windows should show it rather than reboot.

I'm not sure if it's the same on your particular system, but with my M17xR3 unchecking Automatically restart under System Failure doesn't work. It still just automatically restarts.

Is this the same thing your event viewer shows?

I'm really starting to think it's a PSU issue. It probably one of the few things that everybody having this problem has that's the same.
