Hey guys, I was wondering, is the M17xr2 compatable with this headset (video below)? If so, how exactly do you plug it in? To see what I mean, go to 3:30 on this video:
Turtle Beach Ear Force® Z6A Multi-speaker 5.1 ch Surround Sound PC Headset - YouTube
It shows how the cords are set up, is it even possible to plug all of those cords into the m17xR2? I know I have 2 ports with a Headphone symbol, 1 port with a Mic symbol, and a 4th port in the middle of those. What is that port? Would using all 4 of those ports be the same hookup as shown in that video?

    Thanks guys.

its not going to work...you'll need an external usb sound card to get that hooked up

any USB headset will work...actually, because the m17x has a very average sound card, USB is the recommended config because it by passes the stock sound card.

So yes, go for it :D

The Z6a will work with any of the Alienwares.

The Z6a is the replacement of the HPA2's which I have.

You need 5.1 channel outputs. That's 3 jacks, (Front, surround, center/sub).

Anyways, its irrelevant because the AW sound card is very mediocre, hence a USB headset would be much better

I prefer analog headset to USB headsets, They are fine and all, but they do mess up as they are based on an algorithm, The HPA2's/Z6a's are pretty good at what they do, I would recommend those over USB headset's any day honestly. They really do surround sound well, and the external soundcard does make a difference, but one can always be picked up later. Nothing has been better than my HPA2's and my Creative external sound card for my R2. I have tried Megalodons, G35's, one of creatives USB headsets, and Tritton AX pro/720.

As far as how the cords plug in it goes like this from left to right Green - Orange- Black- Pink

Mkelliny, i completely agree with you, i prefer analog headset too...but my rule of thumb is, when you have a good sound card, get a good analog headset. When you have a mediocre headset, go with the USB. The IDT audio is very average at best

I agree and would even go far as to say that the IDT is garbage as far as a dedicated sound card goes. there are more options is all I am saying besides a strictly USB headset. There are external sound cards(not nescessary for use though) and what not that would work with the Z6a's if he really wanted them. Giving them a better stage to shine on.

So from what I'm understanding here is I could get the Z6a's and plug them right into the R2 in the order Mkelliny posted and they will work fine, and than down the road buy an external sound card to make them sound even better?
From your opinions, what would sound better right now? The z6a's plug right into the R2 without an external sound card for the time being, or the 1500 plugged into the USB?

Thanks for all the help too guys.

bro, you don't have 5.1 inputs on the Alienware. Those headsets require 5.1 inputs... i.e., means you need 3 jacks (Front, surround, center/sub). The easiest way is to go USB

Oh okay, I thought the order he was saying is the order it would be plugged into the 4 ports on the R2 haha.
    Guess i'll go with the 1500 !

Yah that is what I was saying. You can plug them in directly to the R2 bud trust me on that one. I did it with my HPA2's till I got the ext. Soundcard, my headset are the previous version of the Z6a. All alienwares except for the M11x I think has 5.1. Slickdude your R3 has it the M18x R1, The M17x, The R2, the M15x, and even the M14x has it.

Look here R2 I colored and labeled the audio ports for you(this is actually an R3 on top of an R2 lol)

Mkelliny, Thanks dude, but that R2 that first pic you colored isn't an R2 lol. Well, isn't how my R2 is set up atleast, mines on the right side instead of the left. The laptop thats on bottom is how my left side is set up. I get the idea though, got the same ports just not in the same location LOL

Ya that is a confusing pic, it's actually an R3 on top of an R2. The R2's ports are on the rear right side. :)

To the OP, i'm using a Creative soundblaster x-fi pro 5.1 USB external sound card. Quite an improvement over the stock sound card. Music, Movies and Games are a pleasure to listen to :), and the ability to control your favorite multimedia software with a remote control ;). I recomend it. With it you will be able to hook whatever 5.1 system/headphone you wish. It has also spdif out

    I'm completely confused now.

Here is what my stock audio connectors look like, I see 2 sound connectors, 1 mic and a s/p dif.

How am i suppose to connect 5.1 headphones requiring 3 jacks?

From what i see, its impossible to connect a 5.1 headset into my computer unless the s/p dif doubles as one of the 5.1 connectors i.e., one of Front, surround, center/sub?

Mkellin posted a picture labeling the ports, the pic he posted as the R2 is actually an R3 as well just like yours. from left to right it goes Mic, Back, Sub/center, Front.

Thanks for the recommendation man! I've recently heard they're really good, I may go with the Z6a + soundblaster combo!

Semi, if you get the 5.1's and you manage to get it to work on your R2, then please post back and let us know because that headset you posted above looks sweet.

Man I just got the Z6a' Amplifier for my HPA2's. Extremely impressed by the sound difference, before I switched I thought my left speaker was messed up. Turned out to be my HPA2 amp. The routing feature is amazing bass always come out of the sub and everything is going to the appropriate channel + I can finally mute my mic without having to alt tab or pull my mic plug out. I can even set it up to use with my XBOX 360 I love this little amp.

+1 to Mkelliny, z6a's work perfectly without any soundcard. Plugs right into the R2's ports.
Thanks everyone the help, very satisfied with these. :)

Glad you got them all set bud! I too am very satisfied about purchasing half of the set. Now when you get an external soundcard you will fall in love with them all over again! :D
