I ordered an M17x R3 with the 6970. Will it work with an external display at 120hz?

What is the output? 60Hz right, think the 120Hz display wil then run on 60Hz.

It might also be fine with HDMI. The laptop seems to have HDMI 1.4.

displayport 1.2 can output 120hz, so yes it should be possible to use a 120hz external display on displayport provided the monitor supports version 1.2

I will be connecting a 120hz external monitor via hdmi and want it to run at 120hz. Is that possible?

Yes the 6970M can output 120Hz to external screens according to this guy having a problem with it (lol). You will also need a monitor that have HDMI 1.4 input i think.
