Hi all, first post here after lurking in the shadows for a long time.

I have recently bought 32GB in 4 8GB sticks of RAM from Crucial after running their 'Adviser' tool and the specific RAM being in the list and saying 32GB will work, so after emailing Crucial with no reply, I am turning to you guys.

I cannot get the full 32GB of RAM to work, I originally installed all 32GB and got the dreaded 4 beeps upon powering on the laptop meaning RAM problem, I then tried them all one at a time and once again got the 4 beeps, for some reason I then tried one stick in conjunction with the 4GB stick I had just removed and the laptop then booted as normal, so just to check the other sticks I repeated the process with the remaining 3 8GB sticks and all worked as they should, so I have now installed 3 of the new 8GB sticks along with my old 4GB stick and my laptop boots up and runs as it should and showing 28GB of RAM installed.

So my question is, does anyone have any ideas how to get the full 32GB of RAM working? I realize that this is a lot of RAM and 28GB is probably more that sufficient, but seeing as I have it, I would like it to work. The RAM that I bought from Crucial is labeled as 8GB DDR3L-1866 SODIMM 1.35V CL13 and my old RAM is labeled as 4GB PC3-10600S-9-10-B1, I am running an i7-2670Q processor so that my laptop should be able to handle 32GB (I believe the i5 models cannot?) and my bios version is A08 which I installed a couple of years ago after upgrading my GPU to an AMD 7970m using the excellent review by SlickDude80 on here.

I have a feeling that this may be a relatively simple fix utilizing a bios setting, however having very nearly bricked my laptop previously changing bios settings I am weary of going down that path without a bit of guidance first, or at least a reasonably foolproof way of restoring my laptop if it all goes horribly wrong.

    Thanks in advance Neil.

my guess would be that your i7 2670Q does not suppport 1866mhz ram.
Also when ram are mixed, i believe they all run at the speed of the slowest card installed, maybe thats the reason its working with one old ram and three new ones.
    please correct if wrong

try a 1600mhz ram if available and see it boots with that

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
I did think that it might not be supported after it didn't work by itself however I don't understand why Crucial have suggested it as an upgrade, they are usually very good at suggestions. Unfortunately I don't have any 1600mhz RAM available to test it out to see if that works, I guess I'll stick with 28GB for now and try and return the remaining stick back to Crucial.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I'm pretty sure I don't have a faulty slot as all 4 are now being used and the computer recognises there being RAM in all of them.

Can you tell me how I'd go about doing that?

go into the bios & set the frequency & timings manually

unfortunately i don't have my laptop on me to tell you were the setting are in the bios, I'm expecting them to be in the section were you set ether the xmp profile or in the overclocking section
