I would like to know if the cards are a direct swap. Does the 580m have to be from a 3d model or can it be from a non 3d?

I have a 460/3d and I'm going to get an r3 for my brother and just swap te 580 into mine. Thats the plan anyways.

Will it work? My brother doesn't need 3d will the 580 still work in mine?

Haha yeah he doesn't care he wants an r3 and he's selling his m18x. He watched me go through 10 different alienwares this year and I finally settled on the r3 again so he agrees that it's the best one for how we use them. He just wants a base model I told him I'll pay a little to take his 580 so he's getting a steal on an r3 !

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but where can I find a 580m? I've been looking online and can't seem to find one, except over the phone through dell. They want $800. Also, does the card have to be purchased from Dell to be a direct swap?

Purchasing it through Dell would include having the new card covered under the laptop's warranty.

That's fine, but I really don't wanna pay $800 for a card that isn't even top of the line anymore. On top of that when I contacted alienware the rep that I spoke with was rude as can be. Can anyone else give me some insight as to where I can purchase this card? I still can't find one online. Thanks.

Thanks man! I always forget about ebay.

One more question. Since it is a direct swap, do I need to replace the heatsink?
