I used a Casio EX-FH100 high speed digital camera to capture the video stress test of Counter Strike Source at 240 frame per second.

With the display set to 120Hz refresh:

    YouTube - 120Hz.wmv

With the display set to 60Hz refresh:

    YouTube - 60Hz.wmv

Difficult to see in the YouTube video but it is obvious stepping through the 240 fps capture that the 120Hz is getting 120 frames per second and the 60Hz is getting 60 frames per second.

So, I really believe it is a benefit to have the 120Hz display.

Note: The video settings for the game are MAXED out and the stress test is able to get just over 120fps.

You sure you don't have the videos labeled wrong? The 60 hz one seem to have less tearing. Anyway, there's something called triple buffering which eliminates tearing in 60 hz displays so it's really a non-issue these days.

I'll try to recapture again with vsync on. The tearing could also be from the shutter not being synced with the display refresh. However, the main point is that the 120hz is smoother because there are twice as many screen updates.

No worries jywang... I've compared a 60Hz and 120Hz display - you can certainly see a difference. Its more vibrant and crisp. Thanks for sharing the vids. BTW, I've re-titled your thread to:

This is cool. Even though I don't really notice a diff in teh videos, besides slightly different color (the rocks? look to be diff color--120hz video is bluer, 60hz video is more yellowish rocks).

I do like the diff between 60hz and 120hz on tv's though. My cousin's 120hz tv looks smoother, and I don't see the artifacts/shadowy aura when an actor moves across the screen, or an athlete runs across the screen. On my other cousin's 60hz, you see the shadow, kinda like johnny cage when he does that kick thing, lolz.

Cool videos! Thanks! I don't think I'll be disappointed with a 60hz screen though on my R3, cuz I really need Optimus, and I prolly wouldn't be able to tell since I would only play SC2 on max.

ignore the color since that is simply the white balance of the camera trying to adjust itself.

I will try to post another video tomorrow.

2 more videos to compare smoothness of 120hz screen captured at 240 fps with vsync ON. The tearing is due to the camera shutter not synced with the screen refresh:

    YouTube - CIMG0001.AVI

    YouTube - CIMG0002.AVI

Can you tell which is 60 and which is 120?

If you want to compare the "smoothness" of screens, turn off vsync. That's the whole point of 120hz.

Most new TVs are 200hz. I'm still not sure what 120hz brings to the table. All in all I really want the amd card but if there is a good reason for 120hz then the option for nvidia then swapping out to the 6970 might be a pricey choice n

That's the problem with comparing screens - no videos will show you the real difference as you would see in reality. In his thread, Mandrake said it looks the same as on m15x tho.
