I wonder if an RGB LED screen could be transplanted from the R2 to the R3.. that way you would have 16:10 res and RGB.

Lolol @ this does not do anything!! Thanks Mandrake for taking the time. Tell me though are you happy overall so far? Do you feel the r3 is a nice machine for the money or even a step forward aesthetic wise?

Oh and guys come on with the smell.. The rubber coating is a chemical process that is a multistep application. New laptop + first to receive them = smell ! I'm sure it will go away.

Oh really? I thought it would be as simple as making sure they are the same connector. Obviously you'd have to transplant the screen inverter too...

Most laptop screens I've seen seem have the same mounting holes along the side. So that shouldn't be a problem...

I've replaced screens in laptops a few dozen times (at work) but never tried transplanting one from one model to another. I'm curious as to why it wouldn't work?

I agree but I think we understand that mandrake has a life beyond his new r3 and he will get to questions when he can :)

Personally I would vote for another 3dmark06 score just because there is lots of speculation on the Asus boards too of the poor 3dmark06 score posted by the Chinese site.

I dont want to take away from Drake's thread - if you received a system today also and want to post your benchmarks, please do so in the benchmark thread or create your own review thread. Once Drake posts his then feel free to comment with your own results.

    Lets be fair to Mandrake...

Batboy is it ok to create a theme using name "R2 or R3" where guys who already got their systems do write PROs CONs and their overall feel of what is better to purchase? Thing is that yet i personally (and think others too) do not get an impression of any benefits of r3 over r2 so I would really be interested to know

    Different size, that's all. a 16:10 screen won't physically fit a 16:9 frame.

Ah ok. For some reason I figured the outside dimensions would be the same, just the number of pixels inside would be different.

Yes, M17x is a little wider and the M15x is a little thicker. I should go weight them.

And Dayum, your pictures are really nice and they seem like they're what AW uses for their online picture gallery thing on the description page! 8D

If they were the same actual size, I'd be very happy. I have an IPS 1200p screen in a 8740w and would do a lot to make it work in a Clevo x7200. But the lids are of different sizes :(

Is the service panel plastic - is it the M15x service panel plastic or stronger plastic?

Probably like the M15x. Take out the battery and the unscrew 2 hidden ones and slide/pry off the panel I guess.

    @ Mandrake
very nice photos. you should consider opening a photo studio... I like the composition.
btw: does it really sound like they basically converted m15x into r3? :D
and could you do me a favour later one whenever you get time: make a shot of keyboard from upside down so keybar could be viewed?

The whole feel of it reminds me of a mix of the M17 (original) and the newer M15x.

I'm not sure what you mean by keyboard shot upside but I probably won't do anymore shots today.

im just curious how does the keyboard look. the Fn keys in particular. for example, g73 got very nice Fn functions. though they are miscellaneous, still very pleasent to have stuff like FN+numEneter = calc :p

At least some free review units. ;)

    No optimus (yet?)

Maybe by the weekend. I'm in the middle of install drivers right now.

Then you'll see my wife yelling at me for making a mess. :(

    Yeah, not tonight.

If I ever drop it I'll let you know. ;)

Yes happy so far, a step forward aesthetics wise? Maybe a little. The rubber feel makes it feel a bit retro for me but I like it.

This stuff will need to wait. I already changed out hardware now I'm starting to load software.

A video would be better. ;)

Mandrake thanks very much for the impressions and for showing us nice pics ! You should get a quick vid on youtube to be THE first unboxing video ever for the r3 lol !! just pretend to open the box and slap it on youtube you will get unimagineable hits !

I really just wish you did 1 or 2 benchmarks first. That way you have some before and after results to compare.

I have the video equipment just don't have a working PC (using a netbook). I'll be out of commission until tomorrow.

About a year ago I made a video of my old G73 booting up. 31K+ hits later I still get comments and questions about it.
