Ok folks... Does anyone know if the new cards in the R3 are backward compatible with the m17r2? If so maybe they will also be compatible with the m15x?

I know the cards were reported as available now from the UK so maybe we get some in the US soon.

    Best Wishes,

    StevenX

The MXM slot itself should be compatible. The 2 issues there may be is
1-the power consumption may be more than what the M15x can handle as it's listed as a 75-100 watt card
2-it may not be compatible due to BIOS and other software compatibility issues.

I ordered the R3 on release date lol, and the XPS probably won't get sold due to some developments on warranty status.

yeah my xm and 5850 were pulling over 180 watts at full throttle, i don't think the 6970 would have a chance in the M15x.

but would still like to see someone try, hehehe

The Bios will never support it, how will they make a continuous profit by allowing next generation hardware to follow onto their past products. The m17x r1 doesn't support dual 5870s' so why would an m15x support a 6970? Not only that but the PSU requirements of that graphics card will be large, it is there to compete with the 480/485 not the 5850 PSU region. m15x was never a contender for the 6970 man.

Sadly :(, just like the R1, the R2 is meant to die in the next months then m18x comes out. It all comes down to marketing tactics
