    On the following system:

    computer name: M17X
    windows version: Windows 7 , 6.1, build: 7600
    windows dir: C:\Windows
    CPU: GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2720QM CPU @ 2.20GHz Intel586, level: 6
8 logical processors, active mask: 255
    RAM: 8570912768 total
    VM: 2147352576, free: 1989156864

A fresh install of Windows 7 was done and drivers were new and from the dell site saved on a jump drive, and installed in the proper order.

Shortly after installing the media card driver I got BSOD. This isn't the first time, I've reinstalled Windows 7 several times to narrow it down to this driver. Sometimes, I wasn't even able to boot. This time around I automatically went into safe mode to uninstall pci media card driver as well as the SD adapter controller. Not sure if it fixed it or not, but here I am, back online. And here is WhoCrashed's Analysis:

On Fri 1/1/2010 11:27:00 AM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\010110-26145-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: sdbus.sys (Unloaded_sdbus.sys+0x100B8)
    Bugcheck code: 0xD1 (0xFFFFF88004FD60B8, 0x2, 0x8, 0xFFFFF88004FD60B8)
    Error: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\sdbus.sys
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: SecureDigital Bus Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

My attempt to delete sdbus.sys resulted in a promt to get permission from TrustedInstaller. What is that?

This does not happen with my r3, which is from the first batch. Do you have the revised chipset model?

    Do not delete that.

Go ahead and uninstall the driver or go back to doing what you had before my suggestion to reinstall the current media card reader driver from the 17xR3 support site. Lets see what others can provide in terms of their clean install experience with this driver.

Please confirm you installed this driver:
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=431026

@kunekaden, can you confirm this is the same driver version (6.1.7600.64) as what you have installed? confirm in device manager.

I did have the revised model of the chipset.

And I didn't have any driver installed before this one since this was a fresh install. I was just going to leave it out. My question is, I uninstalled both PCI and SD adapter drivers. Which one is related to the media card reader driver? both? Anyway, I'm going back to reinstalling all of the other drivers incase I messed them up.

Santoku, confirm you installed the USB 3.0 driver as well. Make sure this is installed. If you did not have it installed, install it and try the SD card reader driver again.

I did have the USB 3.0 driver installed. It was #3 to install I think. WhoCrashed also said it might be another driver interfering with the card reader driver. Which other driver could it be?
Now I may just be being anal here, but I think I'm gonna do another fresh install. I feel like I didn't completely clean up the mess from just uninstalling those drivers.

Long time reader of this site. Just received my M17xR3 laptop and did a clean install of Win7 Ultimate. Followed the Driver install that's listed on this site. Getting the same errors with the Media Card reader as Santoku87. Once I uninstall the Media Card Reader the O\S is stable. Reinstalled it and it goes to blue screen and reboots.
All the other drivers have been installed successfully with no issues so far.
Haven't looked at the recovery disc yet and wonder if there's a different version on there than the Dell Driver site.

I too am running an original Sandybridge chipset from the initial R3 release. I did a clean install of Win7 Ultimate on an SSD and never had an issue with the media reader driver. I have successfully pulled data off my camera's SD card several times.

Well, after numerous reinstalls and tries, i think i figured it out.
After the Windows 7 was installed with drivers installed I installed the media card reader last, this is also WITHOUT patches, it was stable and didn't reboot or BSOD. Note: I only updated the PCI Device (Media card reader) by expanding the package and updated the driver through Device Manager.

I then checked for Windows Updates and had about 81 updates. I checked them all off and took about 20 minutes to install and finish. When it rebooted it BSOD and rebooted constantly. Had to go through Safe Mode and uninstall the Media Card Reader then rebooted. This worked fine and booted back into Windows but had to reinstall all the Windows Updates again as the updates failed when going through Safe Mode.

I re-checked for Windows Updates and reinstalled all the Windows Updates.
Once all the updates finished I reintalled the Media Card Reader driver again and rebooted. This time it didn't BSOD or reboot. I then tested the card reader and found another issue, more on that later. Card reader worked fine and this time the Media Card Reader Icon showed up in My Computer. This was a first time it showed up.

Media Card Issue: Not sure if I just have a defective card but the one i have seems to be longer than the place holder. I put mine in and it wouldn't read until I pushed it in further, this also ejects the card at the same time.
Will have to get another MMC adapter or another card to see if it just this card or not.

    So recap:
    1. Install all the drivers EXCEPT the Media Card Reader driver. REBOOT
    2. Install all the Windows Updates, including the SP1. REBOOT
    3. Once all updates are installed then install the Media Card Reader driver and reboot one more time. This worked fine for me.

Sounds like they need a better QA staff or they have some magical way of installing software. Shouldn't be this difficult or tedious.

Probably a bit late... But I had some issues with sdbus.sys which resulted in blue screens all the time... What I did to fix it was to go to fail safe mode with network connection and uninstall the current driver, and after that download the latest driver from realtek.

After reboot, I installed the newly downloaded driver.

    Realtek

    The version I installed is: V6.1.7600.85 (2011/9/29)

Hello, MarAri and welcome to NBR!
Installing the driver from Realtek fixed it for you and resulted in a functional card reader?

    Hi, and thanks! :)

I actually haven't tried any memorycards, yet. I can try when I get back home from work.

Additional info: The first time I started to get blue screens was during some windows updates being installed.... Anyway, I now have all the Windows updates installed and and the latest driver from Realtek for the card reader.

I had the same issue with my r3, it would appear to BSOD only after using windows update, just as Tekageek did I went to safe mode and disabled my SD card reader and went on with the windows updates, when I was done with the updates I reinstalled the SD card reader drivers and all works as it should.

If the driver that installs thru Windows updates is the problem (as in most cases), you can turn that off:
    - Go to Start–>Search type in gpedit.msc

Click the file to open the LocalGroup Policy Editor and show Windows who is in control!! You want to go here: Computer Configuration->AdministrativeTemplates->System->Device Installation. Click on the subfolder Device Installation on the left and on the right side you will see the possible restrictions. Right Click on Prevent Installation of Devices not described by other policy settings and edit this option, set it on ENABLED.
