I am deciding between a lenovo w520 and the alienware m17xr3 for college. I will be doing biomedical engineering as my major. If I get the lenovo, it will have a 2720qm, 4gb of ram, a quadro 2000m, and 1920x1080p, and will end up costing 1959. It gets up to 6 hours of battery life on surfing on wlan. The M17xR3 I have in mind will have a 2630qm, a 6970m, and 16gb of memory (from newegg, not dell). What do you guys think? I will also be getting the swissgear ibex backpack since it seems to be large enough to handle either laptop and provides sufficient padding.

personally go with the Alienware m17x due to dealing with a lenovo for four years, Lenovo is an okay company. But here is a huge difference. Your talking about a Gaming Laptop vs A mobile Workstation. Gaming is well for gaming and workstations are for high end programs. Depending on exactly the programs you are going to use you can decide which one. So in the long run if you need the extreme performance from the quadro then you have no choice and get the Lenovo. If it doesnt matter i recommend Alienware (dell) better experience from them than Lenovo hoped this helped

A 6970m would smoke a quadro 1000, so I assume in a graphic intensive application, a 6970m would come out on top. I have had IBM thinkpads before, but never a lenovo thinkpad. I was very pleased with my IBM. Never had a dell before as a personal laptop (our school laptops are dell, and they are downright terrible).

haha thats funny cuz i had Lenovo laptops (im graduating this month from HS) and they were terrible, schools just get terrible laptops i guess XD IBM's thinkpad was amazing Lenovo's ive heard from friends are not the same. But about smoking it, if we were playing a game like Dragon Age or Call of Duty yes the ATI 6970 would be better, if were talking like 3d design quadro 1000 would be better. i would recommend looking up each graphic card seeing what it is made to do before you buy.

Lenovo's are great, their AMD line is kinda meh though...

Lenovo makes great laptops. The ONLY two manufacturers I recommend are Lenovo and Dell, EVERYTHING else, unfortunately, is junk.
